The World of Enlil Chaos vs Law

1/9/49 3E

A battle between two natural forces that can't exist without one another, to win is to lose.

Universal Struggle

Enlil is a world rife with Chaos and entropy of destruction and energy of rebirth and Lawfulness of order and structures. The cycle churns everlasting. The elemental forces created from this churn were so bathed in magical powers that they were spawned into life. Able to wrought their elemental forces with intent and direction, they garnered the attention of ancient slumbering elder forces of the universe, which intervened directly. This only accelerated the chaotic entropy in a war of forces so intense the very fabric of the cosmos was torn in various places.   Enlil is a battlefield, one of many the war and its "arms race" had created. The Elder forces' intervention finally brought stability and relative peace after the remaining combatants were destroyed or imprisoned until those fighting ceased... all sides weary of the pain they wrought. In this cauldron of space-time, Enlil formed amidst the conflict between competing forces of Law and Chaos, its two moons reminders of the war that created it all: one moon Gray, the other Dark Purple, on separate tracks, each influencing Enlil.

Summary of the 1st Era

The First Era of Enlil was a time of creation and conflict in a world ruled by the Old Ones, powerful beings who created various races as their proxies in a cosmic war. During this era, the Lawful Old Ones created the Elves and Dwarves, while the Chaotic Old Ones created the Orcs and Goblins. The gods of the Elves and Dwarves were mostly lawful, with gods of poetry, winemaking, magic, love, marriage, archery, the hunt, scouts, mining, smithing, and craftsmanship. In contrast, the god of Orcs and Goblins was chaotic and associated with war, destruction, and domination. The era ended with the rise of the Dragon Lords, powerful beings who challenged the Old Ones and set the stage for a new era of conflict and change.

Summary of the 2nd Era

The second era of Enlil saw the rise of humanity, with the Lawful Old Ones creating them to fight in their proxy war against the Chaotic Old Ones. Enlil and his pantheon watched over humanity and bestowed gifts of civilization and knowledge upon them, including language, writing, agriculture, and architecture. The pantheon also battled against the Chaotic Old Ones and their corrupted kin, the dark gods, to protect humanity and maintain order in the world. The era ended with the Great Cataclysm, a catastrophic event that reshaped the world and caused the Lawful and Chaotic Old Ones to withdraw from direct involvement with humanity.

About Enlil today, the beginning of the 3rd Era

On Enlil, the light from its' sun, Heliar is such that exposure to Heliar's daylight for even just a few moments, even indirectly, will ruin Darkvision for 24-36 minutes; particular creatures of extreme evil AND Chaos dare not tread out into Heliar's rays lest they disintegrate on the spot. Total darkness WILL increase encounters in the Underdark! Make sure one has torches; the forces of Chaos are inherently opposed to light sources of all kinds.   Magic, both Divine and Arcane, is so raw and brutal to control that EVERY cast will result in a DC check; failures will be just that, fizzles, spell slot consumed (and components if the spell typically consumes them). Successes will have the magic perform as expected, follow standard rules, etc. Critical failure and success results provide substantial penalties or bonuses for the desired effects. Ritual magicks and most items are usually exempt from this effect. The spell or item will explicitly declare if so.   The chaotic nature and abundance of entropic forces delay routine 5e healing to just 1d4 HP + Constitution bonus per long rest. This can be accelerated or hindered by the resting environment.   Lastly, time moves in REAL time for the most part. Beyond combat, which extends time as each round is 6 seconds but can take 30-60 minutes or travel that can accelerate once everyone in the campaign agrees; 1 hour of game time = 1 hour of real-time. 1 Day = 1 Day...
