Living trees are a type of magical tree that is somewhat sentient and has even been known to move its branches like arms. They are commonly found in places in the deep wilds where not many people live or travel through. A large population of them can be found in the
Dark Forest , and are part of the reason traveling through the forest can be so dangerous.
The trees are respected, and sometimes feared, depending on their temperament, and to cut one down or harm one is seen as a horrible act by many. The
Witches of the Woods highly respect and revere the trees, even more so than rural
Autarans.
Appearance & Behavior
Living Trees are often large old trees, sometimes hundreds of years old, that are tall and large with thick trunks and branches. Many of them are large oak and other old-growth tree species, but these species are not the only type of trees that can be living trees. Theoretically, any tree that grows big and old enough should soak up enough magic to become sentient -for that is how it is believed living trees are created. The offspring of living trees are also believed to have a higher chance of becoming living, sometimes at a younger age as well, due to them having some of the magic of their parent tree.
Living trees have been known to be quite territorial, not liking people invading their space or climbing on them. Most of the time, Living trees are quite gentle in protecting themselves, simply shaking people away or off of them or pushing them away; but, in some cases like those seen in the Dark Forest are aggressive to anyone that comes near them.
