The Communion of the Judge

It is by the Judge's Law that all is governed, and we should not be so quick to break it.

The Communion of the Judge or Ludexum Communionem is the state religion of both the Duchies of Reynes and the Kingdom of Taewyn. The Communion worships the creator of the world known as the Judge. After the creation of the world, creation was tempted to corruption by the Elderfiends. Following this affliction, the Judge turned her back on the world.   During the Millennial Oppression, the Archangel Virgil appeared to the Hallowed One, Wyndam. Virgil gave to humanity the Codex of the Law.   Most towns have local Churches (offically called Courthalls) lead by a Clerk. The current Divine Counselor is Arthur Brodrick.

Core Beliefs

The Judge: The creator and maker of all. She wrote the Codex of the Law and gave it to humanity through Virgil to give humanity as a means for repentance.   The Affliction: All mortal creatures are "afflicted." People tend toward chaos and wickedness. This affliction was given to creation by the Elderfiends. A collection of angels rebelled when the Judge turned its back on creation and rebelled, vowing to wage war against the Elderfiends.   The Codex of the Law: The Holy Scriptures of the Communion. It details the creation story and enumerates a number of rites to atone for sins and organize society.   The Saints:   The Final Judgement: The End Times event foretold by the Codex and Angelic Messages. Foretold by the arrival of the Harbingers. It is during this time that the Judge will reveal its face to creation and judge the Wicked and the Elderfiends.

History

The story of the Communicant faith begins during the Imperium Ascoli's occupation of Pikas.

Saints

Archangel Virgil: Archangel Virgil is venerated as the "Voice of the Judge." The Archangel delivered the Codex of the Law and the Codex of Wisdom to humanity. Many Hallowed throughout history have claimed to have been visited by Virgil or one of an angel from his host. Virgil is known as the protector of humanity and wages war against the fallen angels who manipulate mankind in their own sinister war against the Elderfiends.   The Holy Prophet Wyndam:    St. Saeburg:    Saint Tyr: The oldest saint in the Communion, Saint Tyr is the first recorded human to die and then resume interaction with humanity, beginning the worship of these extraordinary people known as “saints.” Legend has it that he was leading a group of soldiers against a den of werewolves. The were-creatures had been raiding a small village on the Eastern Coast of Pikas. While doing battle, his left arm was trapped under rubble. He could have waited in the rubble until the battle was over, but he heard a woman screaming, and then saw two werewolves dragging her from her home. Tyr knew what he had to do. He drew his knife, and cut his left hand off freeing him from the rubble. He charged over and saved the woman from her attackers, blood still pouring from the fresh wound. Tyr knew that self-sacrifice is the only way to achieve the greatest good for all people. He replaced his missing hand with a golden one, as a reminder of his sacrifice.   Saint Roderick   Saint Nalaea: Saint Nalaea was the daughter of the Elven-Lord of Na'Lanor. Following the Compromise of the Scale and the Tree, it was she who led many of the Elves to embrace the Law. Her entire life is one of virtue, piety, and bravery. Despite her father's protests, Nalaea was often found at the feet of St. Einward, the Communion Missionary sent to Na'Lanor to proclaim the Law. Although there is no doubt that other Elves had embraced the law before her (Taewyn himself reportedly accepting a sentence before his death), St. Nalaea and her ladies-in-waiting are traditionally understood as the first Elves to accept the Law.    Following her conversion, using her position as an Elven princess, she patronized the Communion throughout Na'Lanor, and constructed a great Cathedral in honor of St. Saeburg, the wife of the Holy Prophet Wyndam. While there were many in the Elven court who wished to persecute Nalaea, the recent legal protections that the Communion was granted (read: forced) on the island made here near untouchable.    Nalaea wrote many liturgical hymns and poems about the Judge, and in particular the angels, of whom she regarded her constant companions even in her loneliness. When the Orcs of Addrassus threatened the Kingdom, her duty as Elven Heiress called her from her tower and to the battlefield. She earned much renown from her courage on the battlefield and concern for her soldiers.    Following the war, she returned to Na'Lanor and took over for her ailing Father, who would make his offering seven days after her coronation as the new Lady of Na'Lanor. Over the course of her reign, several churches and monasteries were constructed across the island, and the Communion firmly cemented itself as the primary religion of both humans and elves in the Kingdom of Taewyn.

The Codex of the Law: Book I

In the beginning there was Chaos, and the Spirits of Chaos hid in the darkness and twisted all of Creation. Then the Judge decreed, “Let there be light to separate the order from the chaos.” And there was. Light shone forth and the spirits dwelt within the shadows. The First Law.   Then the Judge decreed, “Let there be good spirits to order creation. They shall be my children and I will call them Angels. And let there be an angel for each star in the sky, for each planet in the expanse, and for the Sun and Moon.” And there was. The Second Law.   The Judge then looked upon Creation. The Spirits of Chaos had left it scarred and broken. There was life but it was dead. Music but inharmonious. Then the Judge decreed, “Let the things that breathe be known as creatures and the things that grow be called plants. Let there be an Angel for each of these creatures and let them name that which they rule over.” And so the angels named and organized the birds of the air, the beasts of the earth, and the insects that crawled under it. The Third Law.   Then the Judge decreed, “Let there be a creature called Man, and I will make him in My image. He will rule over Creation with me and he will speak laws and they will be.” And there was. The Judge created man and woman. Woman and man She created them. The Fourth Law.   Then the Judge looked upon creation and decreed, “Let there be a city in which angels shall dwell with men, and it shall be my footstool.” And there was. A great city built of silver came from the heavens and rested on the highest place of earth. It was known as the Argent City and here was the Judge’s footstool where angels dwelt with men and ordered creation. The Fifth Law.   The Spirits of Chaos had grown restless and plotted against the Judge’s creation. They conspired, “Let us infiltrate the Argent City and teach man freedom” The Spirits of Chaos began to tempt mortalkind, and soon those made in the Judge’s image broke the Law and warped the Argent City. And so mankind was afflicted. The Judge saw this and decreed, “You wicked spirits. Gone from darkness will you be. Behold, I will cast you into nothingness, and over nothing you shall rule.” And a great abyss was opened under the Earth and the Judge imprisoned the Disordered Spirits there. Then the Judge said to mortalkind, “In delight you walked with me in my city and followed my Law without discomfort. Now all order shall be a curse to you. You will detest your rulers, and your rulers will exploit you. You will write laws and they will be unjust. You will draw straight, and the lines will be crooked. You wicked generation. I have gifted you justice, and you have made corruption. I have shown you order, and you have ushered in chaos. In my sight you have walked but shall walk no longer. In darkness you will do your deeds until all are revealed in my Great Judgement.” And so the Judge blinded herself to mortalkind's woes and turned Her back on creation. The Sixth Law.   Now an Angel of the Judge was displeased with her and approached the throne and said, "Honorable Judge of All, look at these mortals and how they rule and ruin one another without your sight. Might you return your gaze to them?" Now an angel by the name of Virgil spoke from the choirs and said, "Who are you to question the Law?" To which the Devil responded, "The Judge has abandoned that which She has inscribed in the Universe and claims to be Just." Virgil responded in turn, "You insult our Master and Creator. The affliction has touched even you." And so there was a great war in heaven where the Archangel Virgil cast out the Devil and the fallen to the Earth. The Judge, moved with compassion after the loss and affliction of so much of creation then decreed, "Let the Argent City never touch corruption again. I will create for all mortalkind a Law, and burn it into their souls, and one day they will see it face to face. Once that law rules over all the earth, I will return my gaze to my creation and Judge their deeds, both good and evil, done in the light and the dark." And so it was. The Argent City was stripped from the memories of mortals and placed atop an unreachable mountain, and the Angels whispered the Law into the souls of mortals. The Seventh Law.
