Kingdom of Taewyn

The Land of Angels and Ale

The Kingdom of Taewyn is the oldest and largest independent human kingdom on Pikas. It's territories cover the entire Eastern half of Pikas, with the Frostbone Mountains surving as a natural wall between the Kingdom and it's largest neighbor to the West, the Duchies of Reynes. It is currently led by King Aedwin Calewayn. Since the fall of the Imperium, the Kingdom has only seen growth and prosperity. It has been involved in several prolonged wars with the Orcs of Adrassus. It is within the Kingdom of Taewyn, that the Seat of the Judge stretches high into the heavens.

History

The Kingdom was founded following the defeat of the Imperium Ascoli and the unveiling of the Malediction. King Taewyn, of whom the Kingdom is named after, was the last of of the Elven Royal house. He led the Pikan Humans and Elves in their revolt against the Imperium. Although most Elves chose to cross the Foreboding Sea, several of noble houses most loyal to Taewyn chose to remain and cast their lot with the Pikan humans.   Long before the invasion of the Imperium Ascoli, the Eastern half of Pikas was the seat of Nal'Lenor, the ancient Elven Empire, as well as several human petty-kingdoms known for their even pettier feuds. It was conquered by the Imperium Ascoli during the Millennial Oppression. For over 1,000 years, Pikan Humans and Elves suffered in slavery and serfdom under the Tyranny of Ascoli. In 6 BF (Before the Founding), following the death of Emperor Cyriacus Lupus, Taewyn, Last Heir of the Elves, took his opportunity. He weaponized the near 1,000 years of pent up anger and resentment the Elves and Pikan humans held against the Imperials. A bloody revolt ensued. He was supported by the Communion as a divinely appointed savior freeing the people of Pikas from idolatrous invaders. Finally, after the Elves unveiled the Malediction, the Imperium's control over Pikas collapsed, and as they fled across the Tortured Strait, those left in the smoldering ruins of Pikas were left to pick up the pieces. Following the harsh slavery the Elves had endured under the Imperials, many elected to cross to brighter shores deep in the Foreboding Sea. However, not all were as quick to abandon Pikas and the humans who faithfully suffered and fought alongside them.   Taewyn, followed by four of the ancient Elven houses, established the capital of Kinsbridge. For a wife, he took Aelfwynn of Caelydd as his bride. She was the daughter of the Petty-King of Powbarth. She was as radiant as she was brilliant. The Royal Couple wasted no time in securing their position and the position of their kingdom on Pikas. First, Taewyn successfully convinced the Divine Counselor of the Communion to coronate him at the Seat of the Judge. Second, he secured an alliance with the Dwarves of the Frostbone Mountains. Third and finally, King Taewyn wrote the Index Juris (List of Rights), ensuring that the people of his kingdom would never suffer tyranny like the days of the Imperium.   Taewyn was called to his Judgement in 95 AF (After the Founding). He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed in 57 AF. It is said that from her passing onward, Taewyn was only found robed in black, and vowed to never take up a blade again until it was in service to the Judge at the End of Days.   Following Taewyn's reign, the Kingdom proudly took him as their namesake. Many said that he was more of a Father than a King to his people. Elves did not have surnames, and so his son, Aedward, took both the name of his mother and his father, at least, creatively speaking. From Aedward's reign on, the Calewayn Dynasty has ruled over the Kingdom of Taewyn and its people.   While most of its history has passed into obscurity under the blanket of blissful peace, the Kingdom was not without it's time in the flame. In 301 AF, the Imperium Ascoli attempted to once again wrest control of Pikas from its denizens.   The Orcish Hordes of Adrassus have regularly plagued the Kingdom's coastline, and have on several occasions landed raiding parties that have ravaged and brought to the torch dozens of hamlets, towns, and even cities. The most devastating Orchish war in recent memory happened in 981 AF, when the High Chieftain Morgdrok invaded Taewyn and besieged Kinsbridge. If it were not for the timely arrival of the Speakers of the Codex, many believe the capital, and by extension the kingdom, would have been lost.   Now, the Kingdom finds itself under guidance of King Aedwin Calewayn. A gentle man, far too gentle for the throne some would say. King Aedwin has enjoyed a peaceful reign in a prosperous nation. Quite adventurous in his youth, his later years have relaxed him. He finds himself constantly battered about by the opinions and politicking of his advisors.

The Populous

The people of Taewyn are a hearty group. They fancy their wine, bread, and cheese. Almost every small hamlet has at least one small café where many will sit during lunch time, sipping a glass of wine and speaking with one another. Almost every town in Taewyn is built around the church and the café.   Taewyn boasts a mostly human population, although Elves do make up a sizeable minority. Mythological beings are not normally discriminated against. In fact, Taewynians are fascinated by them and the Fae hold a special interest to them. There is a considerable Dwarven population in the Western foothills and the Mage College and Arcanum of Kynesbridge are staffed by several Elven professors and mages.   Vulpans have perhaps the most rights in Taewyn out of any of the Southern nations. While those rights are few, what little they have are appreciated.   Orcs, goblins, and trolls are the greatest enemies in the eyes of Taewyn's people, as they have constantly plagued Taewyn's coastlines with piracy, raiding, and the occasional invastion.   The people in Taewyn engage in different sports at different ages. Chess is usually considered to be a common game of all ages, but as far as physical activity goes, Rugby is usually considered to be the roughest physical sport. Croquet is also fairly common among the nobles.   Overall, Taewyn is a kingdom that focuses on intelligence and strength. Their military strategists are known to be the smartest on Pikas, and are renowned for their tactics and strategy. Taewyn also boasts a rather impressive navy, which has explored much of the far reaches of the Foreboding Sea.
