Vayon, of the Fangthorn Order

Lord Vayon (a.k.a. Vayon the Tricky-Man)

The Present

In present times, the dark elf Vayon is known among the adept as a disreputable trickster, a mage of ordinary skill, with very malleable morals and a willingness to do almost anything for a bit of coin. Many who have had certain dealings with him would advise: do not trust him.   He is the Prime Mage of the Vayon Tryad, of the Fangthorn Order (cf Tryads, Fangthorn Order). His current companions in this Tryad are Geharren (Second Mage, a male) and Behanna (Third Mage, a female), the latter notable for being possessed by a dwenn.   Like most other Fangthorn Tryads they roam the World offering their magick skills and powers to the Peoples, for a fee. A large portion of their earnings is sent back to the Order and the remainder is split among the Tryad members depending on seniority, after all expenses for their travel, work and living are settled. The Vayon Tryad is not above exacerbating a problem before fixing it, in order to charge more; or even creating the problem in the first place and then conveniently arriving just in time to be hired to alleviate the trouble (though Vayon claims this is never done to anyone who can't afford it!). Vayon and his Tryad operate mainly in the Far Eastern lands, beyond the Realm of Kula. This places them well out of reach of laws that may frown on some of their more questionable business practices.   In some less esteemed circles, Vayon is also known as a man who can be hired for "difficult" jobs, particularly in matters where one may not wish to the authorities to become involved, and where it may require methods that are less socially acceptable. It has been noted by some who have made use of his talents in such circumstances, that those talents seem increased over the skill he displays when on Tryad business and that he seems to be an adept with greater power than his deeds in the Tryad would suggest.   Vayon is a man of refined tastes, though his dress will suggest otherwise. He wears clothes that were once fine but are now well-worn, and there is something of the dandy in the manner of his dress- silken waistcoat and ruffled shirts, under a brown travelling coat with gold buttons and tails and a calf-skin wide-brimmed black hat. When he is "working" he dons the the black and gold robes of the Fangthorn Order.   An observer will see the evidence of his cultured tastes most readily in his love of fine spirits and good food, and his manner at table that is almost courtly. He is particularly fond of the well-aged rhums of the Maanchite water country and the old-cask brandies of the Yorba forest. His enjoyment is greatest when he hasn't paid for the drink in his hand or the plate before him. Vayon will scrounge a free meal from anywhere, and is not above small trickeries and abuses of his magick to secure good food for a pittance. Any who travel with him had better beware- mealtimes will lighten every other purse but his.   Despite his habits, he is a charming man, well-spoken in general though given to sarcasm and dry wit, yet capable of conversing in the coarser dialects of the lands he traverses regularly. He chiefly uses his charm to win contracts for his Tryad. And while the adept may look down on him and his Order, the ordinary citizens of the eastern lands are usually grateful for him and those of his ilk. Most sorcerers would not deign to use their skills for such ordinary things divining water for a few acres of failing crops or ridding a tiny hamlet of a thirsty vampyrie.   Yet be aware of this: all that precedes in description of this dark elf, is a persona, a veil that hides the power and skill of an adept who is one of the last of the mighty Elvish Protectors, who fought and prevailed, at terrible personal cost, against the Armies of Fae in the last battles of the Great Striving between the Faery Queen and the World of Men, Elves and Goblin.

Age and Origins

His age is not known but he will admit of being "...eight hundred years, give or take twenty...". This may be an under-estimate as he was almost certainly born in the ancient garden city of Gorma Llyon, the beautiful capital of the race of dark elves. And Gorma Llyon fell nearly a millennium ago in the Age of Heroes.

As an Adept

Vayon may pass himself off as a mere mage, but he is both a powerful warlock and an even more powerful sorcerer.   In his youth, he learned to master the rune magic of the elves under the tutelage of some of the greatest of the elvish sorcerers. The keeper of these chronicles has found his name listed in the annals of such as Cdetha of Ynene, Mjoahd the Master of Ilne, and Haptha the Hermit, where in describing their students who were of note, they have hailed the skill and courage of Vayon. But he was also born into a time of turmoil and it seems a great burden of expectation was placed upon him and his family in their service to the Court of the Elvish Kings. Much was asked of him, yet he may have gotten little but pain in return.   In a practice not uncommon in those times, he was sent to the north, to the Stronghold of Carmine, to learn the ways of the Warlocks. (All warlocks come from the north.) Vayon is thus a Knight of Carmine and can wield the Old Magick of the North as well as he could deploy the Rune Magick of the Elves, were there any such magic left in the World.   He may also have some skill in Elemental Magick though he will say that he dislikes playing with this power. ("Makes me itch... and you've got to mind you don't turn yourself into a dandelion or a bloody gnat!"). In these times, he settles for the magick of the mages, the manipulation of the aetherium, drawing on the power of the light magick to cast cantrips and spells. He says this will suffice.
