A Classification of the Divers Forms of Magicks and Magickal Powers, Known in the Present and of Antiquity

To those who are not adept, that is, possessing a natural sensitivity to, and sensibility of, the powers that naturally manifest in the World which we have deemed "magicks", all magick is the same. But there are in truth many varied forms of magickal powers in the World.   Most adepts cannot manipulate all forms of natural magickal power, rather most adepts sense and manipulate only one form magickal power. There are some that can manipulate more than one form, albeit with varying degrees of skill for each form they can harness. The most powerful adepts can manipulate most or all forms of magicks- and are considered dangerous by their peers, regardless of any inclination they may have to either good works or evil.   The forms, nature, sources, manifestations and manipulations of magickal power is a matter of deep study for scholars and chroniclers, now and of old. The libraries of the lore-houses, temples, guilds and orders throughout the Lands, are a vast collection of scrolls, codices and tomes on all matters concerning magicks and powers, some so old they will crumble to dust if touched and others infused with magickal power of their own, such that it is dangerous to handle these manuscripts. Special cantrips and incantations must be said to preserve these very old works and indeed to perserve the life of any who seeks the knowldge contained therein. The Keeper of This Chronicle, though not an adept, is engaged in deep and perpetual study of the magickal forms of the World, visiting the great libraries and communing with those both knolwedgeable of and practiced in magicks. This section of These Chronicles thus will record what has been learnt during these studies, for the enlightenment of any who might chance to read this humble Work. Herein will be recorded merely the general forms of magicks and powers; each magick will treated in more substantial a manner in dedicated entries.

The Aether

As Most Venerable Sage Harrida of the Great Lore-House of Maron has written, the aether is the most abundant source of magick that is known in the World, and also the magick in most common use among adepts in the modern times. The scholars count modern times as the past five centuries of the Common Time, counting as we do from the Year 1.   The aetherium is distinct from other magick power- it moves in "fluxes" through this World and in others- and it is the emanant power from these fluxes that suffuses the ambient of the World, and which adepts sense and can manipulate. But it is best that one be well-tutored in its use.

Olde Magick

Olde Magick is called by the ancient writings and the scholars a connate magick, along with Rune Magic and Elemental Magick. The connate magicks do not flow in "fluxes", but rather, these powers pervade the ambient with no fixed point or contained source of origin. Olde Magick is almost never witnessed in use in these modern times, though the Keeper of These Chronicles is unclear of the precise reasons. It has been said that few adepts are able to sense olde magick, and those who are sensible of this power say that it is often faint and that places must be found where it is strong. (This seems to contradict the connate nature but the learned among the Peoples are unequivocal in declaring it a connate magick.)   The adept describe Olde Magick as being of a different "feel and flavour" than the power of the aetherium, heavy and hard to use. In the words of Clausemine, a scholar and adept of the Hassla Lore-house, trying to use Olde Magick is like trying to push a stubborn donkey up a muddy hill... in a thunder storm.

Elvish Rune Magick

Rune Magick is related to Olde Magick, but calls for the use of runes to effect the manifestations of the power. It was the particular domain of the Dark Elves. Dark Elves still exist today but keep to themselves in their own parts of the southern continent and indeed a reader of These Chronicles may go half a lifteime and never meet any of that ilk. The Dark Elves are much diminished in numbers, strength and power, for they suffered the greatest losses in the wars against the Armies of the Fae.   It is worthy to note that the Keeper of These Chronicles has also found many fascinating references to the magick of dwarves and goblin, and that these Peoples also practice a magic is runic in nature. But no occasion to engage dwarf or goblin on the matter has yet presented itself, not any chance of communion with one who has knowledge of any unique nature of their magicks.

Elemental Magick

The scholars and writers of old hold that the Elemental Magick is the oldest of the connate magicks. This power was formed as The World itself was formed. It is a power innate to the most basic aspects of The World- water, earth, fire and air- and drawn from these places. Of late some scholars have proposed that the Elemental Magick of the air is the same as the emanant aether but this is rejected by adepts who can sense and manipulate both forms of magickal power. The writings of such adepts are emphatic that Elemental Magick is quite distinct from the power of the aetherium, that the Elemental has a raw and untamed nature and that it is much harder to corral and direct than the aether.   Elemenatal magick is considered the most difficult to descry in the millieu of magickal powers that pervade The World, and few adepts have been born in these recent times who can sense with ease The Elemental Magick, and even fewer are alive who can draw this power and wield it with skill.   It is the magick of the fae, who themselves may have been birthed of this power when it was at its strongest, in the furtherest aeons of the past, when The World was young and new.

Dragon-Magick

The magick of Dragons presented The Keeper of These Chronicles with the most difficult challenge to inquiry and understanding (and still does!). All that is known of Dragons is recorded in only the oldest histories and often these records cannot not be examined without the help of skilled and powerful adepts.   Dragons, or the Fire-Brethren as they are called in ancient writings, have their own magick. They make this magick within themselves, such that they may be considered magickal in all aspects of their being.   There is no use of dragon-magick known in The World today, for the Dragons have not been seen since the conclusion of the strivings against the Armies of the Fae. The ancient writings are vague on their absence, but some refer to a Great Despair falling upon the Fire-Brethren, whereupon they departed the Lands of Man and Goblin forever.

God-Magick

The gods of the pantheon venerated in the lands of the south and east, also have their own supernatural powers, as one would expect of beings ascribed the elevated title of "god". It is not known that any mere mortals can draw the god-magic and manipulate their power. There are myths and legends of mortals trying to harness the god-power and failing, usually to the point of death. It is also of interest that there are records of some pledged to the Temples of the Gods who were suffciently powerful adepts to draw the god-essence, a weakened form of the god-power that leaks from the god-plane much like the emanant aether leaks from the aetherium fluxes.
