The Mid Summer Shindigger

The gnomes have long held a special event at the height of summer, usually in conjunction with the dwarves. This event was originally a party to show off the newest digging contraptions the gnomes had made. Dwarves were invited to see if they could out dig whatever the gnomes had made. Almost always the dwarves would win and then the gnomes and dwarves would get drunk and party all night. Eventually the digging competition became more of a formality and excuse to have the dwarves for a party. Now the celebration always starts with the two groups digging an amphitheater early in the day and then they begin to dance, sing, and drink till the next dawn. The celebration is always held in gnome lands but the dwarves always make sure some dwarves are present in every settlement each year to insure the "dwarven superiority at diggn' holes is maintained". Most dwarves look forward to the celebrations just to try some gnomish ale, as they are always trying to find some new way to also outdo the dwarves in their brewing techniques as well.  This celebration has become so beloved between the two people, that the gods of the dwarves and gnomes have both adopted it.  In the celestial plane, the two groups and any others that wish to join meet at the portal to the plane of earth. At the sound of a trumpet the group goes to the plane of earth and start to dig. As soon as a proper hole for a party for all attendees is dug, the ale is brought out. This party usually lasts a week compared to the celebration on the material plane.
