Juan Dimaano

Juan Dimaano

Juan Dimaano was taught many things growing up. Always say "Tao po" when you knock on someone's door and "Tabi tabi po" when you enter a graveyard, uninhabited territory, or abandoned property. Never sweep at night or open umbrellas indoors if you don't want bad luck to come your away. And above all else, always treat ghosts and spirits with respect and always use your gifts to help them if they need it. He thought it was a bit strange that only his family was able to see and speak with the ghosts around town, but his lola always assured him it just meant they had a duty to help the community. The fact that people and ghosts would always come to the adults in his family for help backed this up, and Juan always liked helping people anyway, so he never questioned it.
As he got older, however, Juan started to realize being part of the local magic family wasn't all it cracked up to be. Sure, the classmates from his neighborhood never questioned it when they saw him making conversation with the local ghosts, but the rest of his classmates and teachers just saw him as a huge weirdo who talked to thin air. His first attempt at helping out a ghost on his own ended with a police investigation that made him even more isolated from his peers. And when he tried to go the opposite route and ignore the ghosts all together, one's near-daily pestering got so bad that the rest of his family had to step in just to get them to back off.
Juan wanted a break from it all, and getting accepted to a college on the other side of the country seemed like the perfect out. He could get away from the spirits in his town, and any he met while at school he could deal with on his own terms. "Don't make ghosts' problems your problems," he'd tell himself. Time will tell how well this works out for him, however, as meeting up with other magic users at Miskatonic University and catching the attention of the ghost of a local cold case victim will put this new philosophy to the test. Because despite his new philosophy, he still wants to help people, and he still hasn't forgotten what he was taught growing up.
