House Rules

Opportunity Attacks

They're gone. Done. No more. I hated how it reduced people's willingness to move around the map, leading to stagnant battles. If your class has something that specifically makes use of opp attacks, let me know and we can figure out something else to substitute.

Potions

Consuming a potion will be a bonus action. Formerly it was a full action, but I've always found that kind of makes potion usage moot given their cost and effectiveness in battle. Furthermore, in the new 2024 DND WOTC is going to make it a bonus action, so we may as well get ahead of the curve.

Dying

When you hit 0 hit points, you fall prone and gain this condition.   At the start of your turn, roll a Death Saving Throw.   On your turn, you can only use your action, bonus action, reaction, or move action (half speed, no cost). Once you use ONE of these, your turn ends.   If you use your action, gain 3 levels of exhaustion.   If you use your bonus action, gain 1 level of exhaustion.   If you use a reaction, gain 1 level of exhaustion.   You cannot use your action to stand up from prone.

Exhaustion

Use the corresponding level of exhaustion to subtract from all d20 rolls. You will gain levels of exhaustion for going a day without a long rest, traveling far and fast, using actions during the dying state, etc. I'll let you know ahead of time during play what to expect, so exhaustion won't come out of nowhere. This is kinda in the vein of what WOTC is aiming for in the 2024 edition, but my scale is a bit more forgiving.

Short rest removes 1 level of exhaustion, long rest removes 2 levels of exhaustion.

Instant Death

In the past, this has happened when you are taken below 0 and then below what your max HP would be were it a negative value (e.g. You have 15 hp and are hit with 30 damage in one turn, taking you to -15 hp). Essentially 2x the dmg of your max HP if you're at full HP.    New Rule: No more instant death.    HOWEVER, you will be maimed in some way reflective of the type of attack. (e.g. you have 15 HP and are full health, take 30 slashing damage, you enter the dying state and have lost your left hand below the wrist).
