Folith Ethnicity in The Will-Breaker | World Anvil

Folith

Foliths originated in the northwestern regions of Arnor in what are now the provinces of Collogia and Rivalle as well as the now mostly uninhabited areas of the Northern Arnorin wastes. They began spreading southwards around 300 years ago, but did not start making a serious push until about 200 years ago when they came into conflict with Elooria and Stark Drago, the tyrannical wizard known as the Dragon. Since conquering Elooria, they have gone on to take control of most of the continent, and Foliths can now be found almost anywhere in Arnor except Ninifin .   Foliths have pale skin, although those living in southern areas like Lothal and Orthal are often tanned. They have a wide range of heights and builds; however, they have a slight tendency to taller heights with men averaging just under 6 feet and women around 5'7". Hair colour ranges from blonde to various shades of brown. Red hair is also not uncommon, particularly amongst those living in their ancestral lands of Collogia and Rivalle. Fully black hare is very rare. Eyes are most frequently brown or blue, though green and grey are common, and other colours like hazel are not unknown.

Naming Traditions

Family names

The Royal Family has Folith as its family name. This can sometimes cause confusion over whether a person being referred to is of the Folith race or the Folith family.

Other names

Foliths frequently take their names from the various other peoples across Arnor, and have few names that are truly Folith in origin.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The ancestral language of the Foliths is Folithan. However, few Foliths know the language anymore, and even fewer speak it with any regularity. Only scholars and priests tend to use the language, and only then to be able to read old texts.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Foliths tend to distrust magic, a feeling that goes back to even earlier than the Dragon (the reason many modern Eloorin distrust magic). However, they also believe magic can sometimes be a useful tool. They see practising magic as something for the lower classes to do. Nobles are actively discouraged (though not technically banned) from becoming wizards.
