Rail Repairman

Rail repairmen have the job, as their name implies, of repairing the Rails. Repeated use can weaken the enchantments cast upon them, their runic etchings requiring frequent touch-ups. Additionally, they are not immune to simple wear and tear, and must be bent back in shape. Due to this, Barony Co. hires trained professionals in thaumic metallurgy and runic etching to travel the Sands in specially outfitted railtrains, mending damaged rails. Those that cannot be mended are replaced by new ones, crafted by repairmen. For even though the name suggests otherwise, Rail repairmen both fix and craft new Rails.

Perception

Social Status

Rail repairmen are quite essential to the continued functioning of the Waste, as without the Rails the entire place would grind to a halt, its populace completely stranded. Despite this fact, they are relatively obscure, and take less of a spotlight than the Waste's other jobs, such as lawmen and hunters. This is most likely due to the fact that shooting giant moles and dirty criminals is a whole lot more interesting than mending magical hunks of metal. Still, they receive a small amount of polite appreciation for their work from most people, though some feel as if it is less than they deserve.

Operations

Tools

Remarkably little is needed to craft Rails. All that is needed is the steel they are made up of, a furnace for melting it, the molds required to cast it, and a number of other stable metallurgic tools. The real art is in the etching of magical runes upon the newly cast Rails. The exact runes and their placement is kept a closely guarded secret by Barony Co., as they don't want anyone else infringing upon their monopoly.

Workplace

A Rail repairman typically does their duties in a small train, equipped specifically for their job. Rather than dropping Rails back onto the Sands after they have been used, a repair train can be made to keep them, storing them to be sorted later. Those deemed in good enough shape to keep working are cast back onto the Sands, while those in need of repair are sent to the workshop inside the train, where a small team of repairmen quickly mend or replace them with new ones.

this prompts feels like it must be a non-common-in-our-life profession or else i'd feel like a boring wiki page. Using a profession based on magic repair is quite a good idea. Is the job risky as they could get ganged by criminals while working on it, or any fauna that could be problematic ? That's the kind of stuff that demands payment like working in hazmat haha.   Happy summercamp !

Nobody is truly safe on the Sands, but repairmen are safer than most. Thanks for the comment!
