Gabriel
First Chair Gabriel (a.k.a. Boy , Number One, Sunshine)
Designated as First Chair of the Luminaries, Gabriel is also the youngest housed in the Enclave, and the shortest. At the age of eighteen, he has already mastered many of the sciences in which his peers work. Ordinaries intrigue him; he is much more patient with them than with other Luminaries. He's serious, literal and shy, socially awkward due to his preference working with computers to human beings. Working in a single language environment is a challenge for him; he is a polyglot who enjoys all manner of word games and learns new languages for fun.
Work Environment
Work Environment
Gabriel's laboratory is a domed amphitheater filled with numerous screens and holographic projectors, which he operates using a body scanner that follows his every movement, as well as a helmet with microphone and speakers. The computer system he operates is called Argus, produced from his own design.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Physical fitness is required of all Luminaries, plus Gabriel gets a thorough workout each day in the Argus laboratory. He is delicate in build and in generally good health, but is genetically predisposed to cancer. His physical design includes attributes that make him an exceptional athlete, and yet will also result in a shorter lifespan due to the toll such enhancements take on his body.
Body Features
Gabriel's appearance is androgynous, with narrow shoulders and wide hips for a male.
Facial Features
Gabriel's face has been designed to be almost perfectly symmetrical. His chin has a slight cleft.
Identifying Characteristics
He always wears his hair in a single braid, tied with three small bells.
Physical quirks
He always seems to be in motion and has a hard time sitting still.
Special abilities
Gabriel has the ability to think at a much faster rate than the average human being. He is also incredibly quick in reaction time, and exceptionally strong for his size. This is due to overactive adrenal glands, which put him into a constant state of fight-or-flight.
Apparel & Accessories
Gabriel is as comfortable in women's clothes as he is in men's. He enjoys high fashion, as well as designing his own apparel.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Since a very young age, Gabriel has been focused on work as his primary objective, with the goal of improving the human condition as quickly as possible. When he first began working on computers as a child, he was frustrated by the fact that he could process information faster than he could extract it or input it into traditional computers, so he built his own unit, called the Argus system.
Gabriel would rather work than eat, sleep, or engage in any other activity. With such drive, he is required to stop working at regular intervals to rest, refuel and recharge, where he is forbidden access to any computer. This interval is called "Zero Time", and Gabriel hates these breaks, though he recognizes the necessity of them. During these hours he is supposed to be working out, going to bed, having meals or engaging in conversation with others; however, Gabriel sometimes likes to play cat-and-mouse with his handler and go off in search of an unused computer station to squeeze in a little more work time. It was during one of these breaks that he met the Ordinary, Dr. Harper Dax, who would become one of the most important people in Gabriel's life.

Gender Identity
His gender identity is mixed. He is aware that he is biologically the identical twin of his sister, Persephone, but that Dr. Engel changed his gender to male (in addition to a few other important alterations). He sees himself as a gay man, but also as a woman at his core. His pronouns are male, though he has no objection to female. He enjoys wearing makeup, and his fashion preferences are a mix of masculine and feminine.
Sexuality
The Luminaries have a policy of non-involvement with Ordinaries. Though they bed each other for recreational purposes, few have established meaningful relationships with each other. Because they all share the same dormitory, Gabriel was exposed quite early to sexual behaviors and had sex for the first time at the age of fourteen. His partners of preference are always male, though he has participated in activities with a few of the females.
Education
Educated by researchers specializing in teaching gifted students. Gabriel has had no formal education and thus holds no degrees, yet he is knowledgeable in many subjects and chairs several departments at the Enclave.
Employment
Since Gabriel's childhood, he has lived at and worked for the dei Angeles Enclave. He rose steadily through the ranks of the Luminaries, and at the age of fourteen assumed a leadership role among his peers.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Via computer networks, Gabriel has participated in numerous high-profile scientific projects, including work on development of fMRI technology and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project. His work is always submitted under the names of other scientists, due to the need to keep the Luminaries' true identities secret.
Mental Trauma
Gabriel loves his work and never has to be prompted to do it; however, he can be stubborn about doing as he's told. His creator and master, Dr. Engel, has a particular dislike for Gabriel, even though the youth is his greatest creation. Because of this, Engel uses a variety of cruelties to force Gabriel to do his bidding. There have been numerous instances of physical abuse (carried out by a fellow Luminary at Engel's behest), but the worst threat has been Engel's suggestion to remove Gabriel's handler, Angela Opondo, from his service. Gabriel's bond to her is as strong as that of a child to his parent, and the thought of losing Angela or seeing any harm come to her never fails to gain Gabriel's cooperation. She is the only person (aside from the other Luminaries) who has ever treated Gabriel like a human being rather than a soulless tool.
He is also aware that Dr. Engel deliberately designed him with an expiry date, and that he will die quite young. Though this information was buried in Engel's research, Gabriel was clever enough to uncover it, and the knowledge was devastating.

Intellectual Characteristics
His mind is quick, functioning far faster than any of his peers. He is capable of listening to several conversations at once, while at the same time reading and composing documents, reviewing data and working complex equations. His frustration with the slowness of standard computer systems prompted him to design one specific to his needs that allows multiple audio input, video screens and holographic displays that he can manipulate with various body gestures, such as tapping his foot to turn a page or scroll down a document, a quick hand signal to switch between conversations, or drawing equations in the air that are converted into text on a heads-up display on his visor.
Morality & Philosophy
His moral compass is unwavering. Gabriel believes the Luminaries' purpose is to serve the greater good of all humanity by developing cures for diseases, machines that enhance quality of life, ending world hunger, extending human life. As First Chair, he reminds his peers of this tenet often and has no qualms about cancelling projects that have the capability of devastating backlash or a negative effect on humanity at large.
He is driven to produce, because he is aware of his finite lifespan and wants to get as much accomplished as possible before he dies.

Taboos
- Sex/relationships with Ordinaries
- Causing physical harm to others
- Working on weapons projects
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Gabriel is driven to produce as much research to advance the human condition as he can before he dies. His greatest desire is to improve the lives of people.
Savvies & Ineptitudes
Gabriel is far more comfortable dealing with machines than with people. The people he does interact with, his fellow Luminaries, are equally inept at dealing with Ordinaries, so he misses a lot of social cues and cultural references, which makes him awkward in the greater world.
Likes & Dislikes
Gabriel loves reading, words, languages and clever speech.
He hates not working, being idle, having to sleep, eat and exercise, and considers any time spent not working as wasted.
Virtues & Personality perks
Gabriel tends to be selfless because he firmly believes in his mission to serve the greater good of humanity, regardless of personal cost.
Vices & Personality flaws
He is also arrogant, fully aware how much smarter he is than everyone else. While he cuts Ordinaries slack in this area, he is often impatient with his peers when they don't keep up with him.
Hygiene
Gabriel is fastidious in his self care, takes excellent care of his skin and body.
Social
Family Ties
None. His parents were numbered samples in a lab.
Religious Views
Gabriel does not believe in a Supreme Being. He sees religion as the source for much of the world's conflict and that it is therefore an undesirable distraction.
Social Aptitude
He has felt little need for social niceties as he prefers work with his computer, Argus, to interactions with human beings. His handler, Angela, has taught him good manners and corrects him when he behaves inappropriately with others.
Speech
His first language was Dr. Engel's German, so his English is flavored with a German accent. His tone is a husky, breathy "bedroom" voice. Pitch is high for a man, deep for a woman, well modulated.
Relationships
History
Gabriel met Harper when he was fourteen and Harper was in his early twenties, having just earned his final thesis. Their relationship was entirely platonic in the beginning.
