Varkesh
"Varkesh" — A shadowy, mythical creature feared in Nemanoi folklore. The name evokes a primal and guttural tone, lending it an air of mystery and menace, similar to cryptids like the Yeti or Chupacabra. "Varkesh" could mean "Shadow Devourer" or "Dark Stalker" in ancient Nemanoi language.
The Call of the Varkesh
Nemanoi folklore speaks of an eerie, unexplained sound that carries on stormy nights—a haunting wail that rises and falls with the wind. Known simply as "Korthak" to the Nemanoi, it is said to be the distant cry of the Varkesh. Though skeptics dismiss it as mere natural noise, no one has ever been able to explain its origin.
For many Nemanoi, the Korthak is a grim reminder of Volti's warning: darkness still prowls the world, waiting for the unwary to stray too far.
The Cry of the Varkesh
On stormy nights, when winds lash the trees and lightning dances across the sky, a chilling sound sometimes echoes through the wilderness—a low, resonant howl that rises into a keening wail. Some claim it mimics the groan of twisting branches or the call of distant animals, but no one can explain its source. The Nemanoi call it "Korthak"—"the Voice of the Lost"—believing it to be the sound of the Varkesh prowling in search of prey, or perhaps mourning the world it cannot claim.
Parents hush their children when the sound rises, whispering: "Stay close to the fire. The Varkesh hunts only in the dark."
