The Consensus

Here’s why:

  1. It’s Different from Typical Sci-Fi Dystopias

  1. It Makes a Strong Contrast to the Prime Universe’s Themes
  2. The Prime Universe seems to value diversity, exploration, and freedom.
  3. This antagonist would be the opposite of that—they fear anything unpredictable and uncontrollable.
  4. While most empires want power, this one wants absolute sameness—which makes them a unique kind of threat.
  5. They Could Be Dangerous in Ways That Are Subtle & Creeping
  6. Instead of conquering planets with weapons, they use bureaucracy, social conditioning, and engineered outrage to slowly erase cultures.
  7. They manipulate trade, alliances, and legal frameworks to force others to comply.
  8. A planet doesn’t even realize it’s being assimilated until it’s too late—by the time they resist, their unique traditions are gone.

How Would This Society Function?

  • Cultural Erasure: No art, no traditional food, no stories from the past—history is rewritten so no group stands out.
  • Mandatory Uniformity: Clothes, speech, and customs are identical to avoid “offense.”
  • Bland Everything: Their food, architecture, and entertainment are all designed to be as neutral as possible—no spices, no music with unique rhythms, no regional aesthetics.
  • Weaponized Political Correctness: Instead of celebrating differences, they enforce a rigid sameness to the point where even acknowledging variation is considered dangerous.
  • Apathy as Control: They discourage deep emotions—no passion, no strong opinions. Their education system trains children to feel uncomfortable with anything that stands out.

What Would They Be Called?

They need a name that reflects their false moral superiority while masking their oppressive nature. Some ideas:

  • The Harmonium – Sounds peaceful, but they erase all differences in pursuit of “harmony.”
  • The Consensus – They believe every thought and culture should be part of the same collective agreement.
  • The Accordant Union – A name that suggests unity while hiding their true oppressive agenda.
  • The Pale Dominion – A subtle jab at their bland, cultureless existence.
  • The Conformity Directive – A more direct, sinister name.

How Do They View the Rest of the Galaxy?

  • Diverse Societies = Dangerous & Unstable
  • They see diverse cultures as chaotic, inefficient, and prone to conflict.
  • To them, every war and disagreement stems from people having too many different ideas.
  • Aliens Who Keep Their Cultures Are “Backwards”
  • They act like they are enlightened and that species who celebrate heritage and tradition are primitive.
  • “Why cling to outdated customs when you could be part of a ‘civilized’ society?”
  • Rebellion Against Them is “Selfish”
  • They don’t think they are tyrants—they think anyone resisting them is just being stubborn and egotistical.
  • If a planet fights back, they don’t respond with armies right away. Instead, they sanction them, cut them off from trade, and brainwash their youth into rejecting their own culture.

How Would the Prime Universe Fight Them?

  1. Resisting Through Art, Food, and Identity
  2. Since they don’t rely on military force alone, weapons might not be the best way to stop them.
  3. Instead, heroes might fight by preserving outlawed traditions, spreading banned stories, and defending cultural freedom.
  4. Calling Out Their Hypocrisy
  5. They claim they are “progressive” and “peaceful,” but exposing their methods of control and manipulation could weaken them.
  6. Maybe the only reason they are so unified is that dissenters vanish or get “retrained.”
  7. Using Their Own System Against Them
  8. If they are obsessed with “not offending anyone,” rebels could exploit loopholes in their bureaucratic nonsense to grind their system to a halt.
  9. Flooding them with contradictory complaints about their own rules could break their fragile social order.

Implications of the Color Ban:

  • Strict Clothing Laws: All fabrics must remain their natural, undyed beige—no colored dyes, paints, or patterns.
  • Erasure of Art: No paintings, vibrant decorations, or even colorful signage—everything is drab and colorless.
  • Contraband Colors: Smuggling illegal dyes or pigments could be a rebellious act—graffiti, hidden artwork, or even a streak of color on fabric would be a radical symbol of defiance.
  • Underground Resistance: People might secretly extract plant pigments to create forbidden colors, passing them through black markets.
  • Symbolic Colors:
  • Rebels might use small, hidden swatches of color (a blue thread, a red stripe under a collar) to recognize each other.
  • The presence of a single bright color in a scene could be a powerful moment of rebellion.

This makes The Grey even more terrifying—they don’t just erase individuality, they erase joy itself. I LOVE this detail! Do you want to explore more ways people might fight back using color?

The War of Color: How the Galaxy Fights Back Against The Grey

Since The Grey have banned all artificial colors and enforce a strict beige-only society, the rebellion can use color itself as a weapon. Here’s how different groups might resist:

1. The Secret Painters

  • Underground artisans and chemists work in secret to extract pigments from plants, minerals, and even alien bioluminescence.
  • Paintings, graffiti, and secret murals are hidden in plain sight—maybe revealed under UV light or only visible at a certain angle.
  • Ritual Art Attacks: Rebels might splash bright paint across government buildings as an act of defiance.

2. The Dyers’ Guild

  • Smugglers risk everything to bring back colored fabrics.
  • Clothing that appears beige by day but shifts to brilliant hues in special lighting could be a secret way rebels recognize each other.
  • Hidden color codes:
  • A blue thread on a sleeve = sympathizer.
  • A red stripe inside a boot = resistance member.
  • A green embroidered symbol under a collar = someone who helps smuggle color.

3. Illegal Bioluminescence

  • Some alien species naturally glow in color—they must hide their light under special dampening cloaks to avoid persecution.
  • Rebel scientists genetically engineer plants and fungi that glow in forbidden colors, planting them in public places.
  • Nighttime rebel safehouses could be marked by bioluminescent signs only certain people know how to read.

4. Color-Bombing The Consensus

  • Rebels steal government uniforms and secretly dye them bright colors before returning them to storage. The next day, officials unknowingly dress in illegally vibrant outfits.
  • Color-based hacking attacks:
  • Holographic billboards and official displays are hijacked to suddenly explode with color in front of mass audiences.
  • Color filters are used to disrupt facial recognition tech, making it impossible for The Grey to track certain people.

5. The Music & Scent Revolution

Since The Grey suppress anything that evokes emotion, rebels turn to other senses:

  • Musicians play “colorful” music—wild, emotional, untamed melodies that awaken feelings The Grey try to suppress.
  • Underground “Scent Gardens” cultivate rare flowers and herbs that evoke the memory of color, stirring rebellious thoughts.

6. The Final Insult: The Name They Fear Most

The rebellion has a nickname for The Grey that mocks them while celebrating color.

  • Something like “The Colorblind” or “The Washed” (implying they’ve lost their vibrancy).
  • Or maybe “The Bleached”—a name that hints at their brutal erasure of life’s richness.

Story Possibilities:

  • A rebel risking execution to deliver the first bottle of blue dye in decades.
  • A child seeing color for the first time and realizing The Grey have lied to them their whole life.
  • A hidden painting that shatters an entire society’s worldview when discovered.
