The Lapis Corsairs
The Lapis Corsairs come from the Azmith coast and, by most people's standards, would be called pirates or raiders. The Corsairs don't see themselves this way. For them, they are "working sailors, pursuing an honorable trade" and see nothing criminal about their activities. The economy of the Azmith coast is fueled by the plunder and slaves that the Corsairs have acquired. Life aboard a ship is structured, and sailors are paid a share of the profits a ship makes. Unlike the free-spirited pirates of Suna who sail in stolen heavy ships, the Corsair Captains are appointed by the Merchant owner of a ship. They can only sail on raids with permission from the Lapis Grand Admiral and the Merchant Council. Most of all, these sailors see themselves as merchants first and soldiers second. Many of them are skilled and ferocious fighters. Honor is an important feature among the Corsairs, and they are much more disciplined and organized than even normal merchant sailors. Many forego alcohol and keep strict dietary regimes for their Captain's honor and their fellow crewmates' pride.
Historically, The Lapis Corsairs have plundered and raided along the Waytos Sea, among the Lindin archipelagoes, and even as far north as Astana and Suna. Before the industrialization of Lindin a century ago, the Corsair golden age reigned. Entire towns along the Waytos coast were depopulated as people from all walks of life were enslaved and sent back to the Golden City of Azmith in the sand. After Lindin began its colonization of Northern Azmith, the power of the Corsairs began to diminish. Towns in Eren began to acquire cannons and muskets from Suna. Large walls surrounding towns along the Waytos Coast became common. In the last few decades, the Corsairs have shrunk in activity and notoriety, with many pursuing entirely merchant-based livelihoods. Many in Eren no longer hold grudges or view the Corsairs aggressively, and in recent years prosperous trade arrangements have been made with specific towns.
The Corsairs ports located all along the eastern coast of Azmith operate under the authority of the Grand Admiral and the Council of Merchants. The largest city is "The Gem" (Saal'Desol), it is located on the south-eastern side of Azmith. All along the coast to the north is known as "The Chain" - several small towns dotted along the coast. In the north-east is "The Sword" (Darai). The colonization by Lindin has reached as far as "The Sword", and under Lindin Colonial rule has been renamed "New Linnel". For many years the Corsairs have talked about retaking the city and liberating it from the Lindin Colonials. This has caused a large grievance towards Lindin by any who sail under the banner of the Lapis Corsairs.
