Runic Spellcasting
A Language of Power
Ancient people in Yorn invented the first versions of runic magic. Derivative versions and techniques would be coined in other parts of the world and evolve based off this ancient magic form.Runecrafting is a type of magical casting within the realm. It is the practice of using one of many magical alphabets to create strings or phrases that trigger a magical effect, most often with the addition of a material component to power or guide it. The system has ancient origins, being created at some mysterious period of time in Yorn at least 4000 years ago. The shamans and practitioners of the Clay Region were able to decode the languages of mana in such a way that they could utilize symbols and other resources to replace purely arcane magic. It is known that this ancient language played both practical and magical importance, used both in script and decoration of sacred places, as well as utilized by magic spellcasters throughout the Clay Region and later the rest of the world. The main boon of runes is that, in theory, anyone can attempt to create runes. The effectiveness is dependent on the crafter’s skill, research, experience, and preparation, as well as sometimes other factors. Mana Crystals, tangible stores of mana, are most commonly used as catalysts to fuel the runes when written or enchanted on objects. Typically, mana crystals that have been cut and shaped into a useable size for runes and spellcasting are referred to in the industry as a Mana Stone from then on. Mana Stones used must be "charged" by someone of the same affinity as the crystal (Water with water, fire with fire, etc) or the empty catalyst might just be outright replaced with a new waiting one. With even just a basic grasp of drawing forth mana, even a person who hasn't cast a single spell in their life can activate a rune like lighting the start of a fuse, whereupon the runic formulae will do the rest.
