Jotun

The Jotun are towering giants, standing far taller than humans and most other races. They are a nomadic and reclusive people, living in tightly-knit clans scattered across the frozen mountains of The Shards. Isolated by choice and by the harsh environment, the Jotun maintain a stoic and quiet demeanor that belies their imposing size. The Jotun’s culture is deeply rooted in respect for nature and the bonds of family and clan. They are slow to anger but fiercely protective of their kin and territory. Their nomadic lifestyle reflects their adaptability and resourcefulness as they follow ancient paths through the mountains, guided by tradition and the rhythms of the frozen wilderness. Physically, the Jotun are hulking and immensely strong, their bodies built to endure their homeland's unforgiving cold and treacherous terrain. Beneath their formidable exterior, however, lies a mindful and resilient spirit. Though rarely encountered by outsiders, those who earn the trust of the Jotun speak of a people whose actions speak louder than words, whose quiet strength and inner resolve embody the enduring spirit of The Shards themselves.

History

The Jotun were once a peaceful, nomadic people whose clans roamed vast territories, following the rhythms of the seasons. Their traditional migration began in Astana, where they spent the colder part of the year before traveling north to Eiri for the warmer months. This cyclical journey was a cornerstone of their way of life, allowing them to maintain harmony with nature and preserve their small, close-knit population. However, their tranquil existence was shattered by the dragons of Astana. These mighty beasts began terrorizing the Jotun, killing many and wreaking havoc on their vulnerable clans. The already small Jotun population suffered devastating losses, forcing the survivors to abandon their southern routes and flee northward to Eiri’s frozen mountains. In Eiri's harsh, secluded wilderness, the Jotun found refuge and safety, but at great cost. Their once expansive migrations were permanently curtailed, and they became a people defined by their isolation. The scars of their past linger in their culture, shaping their stoic and resilient nature as they adapted to a life confined to the icy peaks of The Shards. Today, the Jotun remain solitary, bound to the northern reaches they now call home. While their way of life has been irrevocably changed, their enduring strength and quiet wisdom are a testament to their survival and resilience in the face of great tragedy.

Geography

Due to their turbulent history, the jotnar live within the mountain ranges bordering Astana and Eiri. Some tribes live further north or south of this natural border.

Relations & Society

A predominantly nomadic people, similar to the other people's of the Eiri region, the Jötunn are adept at traveling without leaving any trace of their passage. The only indication of their presence are leftover carvings, and stories of nearby travelers who speak of trading with the gigantic humanoids. The Jötunn otherwise spend most of their time living off the land mostly unseen, only appearing with any sort of regularity every 10 years on the southern coast of the Edrune Flatlands for a few months before vanishing once again. Fiercely independent, they make sure to keep a safe distance away from the Snow Elven Empire and the Beastkin Alliance. Now that they cannot move locations the Jötnar take security of their borders very seriously so they do not get overtaken by the larger powers on the continent. They make regular exceptions for the humans of Kirsi and Edurne, and will trade animal parts, crafted trinkets, and offer services to assist in hunts or to smith items.
