Personal history

"Octavia is the eighth daughter of a middle-class Vodacce family. All of her sisters are Sorte Strega, but Octavia has not shown signs of having the gift for fate magic. Her mother Arabella raised Octavia in her younger years, until her merchant sailor father Leonida took her along as part of his crew as a teenager. Octavia's sisters were married off one by one, until only Octavia herself was left single. As the only non-strega daughter, her father was eager to have a child he could teach without breaking taboo, as fate witches were forbidden to learn to read or learn the ways of the world. Leonida taught her many languages and how to cut a good deal, and while sailing with him she learned the ins and outs of sailing and caring for a ship, along with a variety of sailor's practices and superstitions.
Octavia’s mother was wise, and knew before she was even born that her fate would be different from her sisters’. Octavia was allowed to pursue her curiosities, but Arabella made sure that she knew to beware of upsetting the status quo enough to make enemies. She taught Octavia many of the skills and manners expected of a proper Vodaccan woman, and how to charm and manipulate men.
Octavia’s relationship with most of her sisters is somewhat distant, as they have been mostly concerned with starting their own families. Pia is the seventhborn sister, only a year older than Octavia. The two were close friends as children, and Pia had a habit of getting Octavia into mischief. She envied the looser treatment Octavia was given by her parents and always wanted to go on adventures with Octavia.
Francesca is the thirdborn sister, and took an interest in Octavia’s development. She often looked after her youngest sister and was the one Octavia turned to for advice when she didn’t want to ask her parents. Francesca often used her fate magic to help guide Octavia.
Octavia’s eldest sister is Adonna. She has fully embraced her role as her husband’s fate witch. Beneath her mien as his loyal and docile wife, she is a cunning manipulator and has him doing her every whim, even as he believes himself the head of the family. She disapproves of Octavia’s lifestyle, seeing her profession as improper and unladylike. She often has tried to undermine Octavia and force her to see the error of her ways, even going so far as to use fate magic to sabotage her endeavors.
Octavia served in her father’s crew for a decade, accumulating wealth and assets alongside him. Eventually she struck a deal with a merchant prince that placed her in charge of an exploration vessel bound for Ifri. In her travels she picked up a unique figurehead of Ifri design, one which she believes has granted her ship good fortune. Octavia brokered some very lucrative deals for her employer and discovered a number of useful landmarks and even a site for a small colony. Her various investments have made her very wealthy.
Octavia’s great fortunes came to an abrupt halt recently, when The Serafina was sank by an Atabean Trade Company ship after delivering supplies to an Ifri settlement that was in conflict with ATC slavers. The Serafina’s figurehead miraculously washed up on shore and was recovered. Octavia has since been looking to find her way back into captaincy of a new ship.
