Lorenzo Caravello was destined for great things. A skilled swordsman and an almost unparalleled duelist, Lorenzo left home at an early age to make his name in the world as one of Vodacce’s greatest sword masters. He gained distinction with the nobility as a heroic figure and married a lovely merchant’s daughter named Antonia. The two settled in a beautiful villa inside a vineyard while Lorenzo traveled through
Vodacce as part of the Duelist’s Guild. The happy couple had two daughters, Louisa and Estelle, who quickly became the apple of their father’s eye. Still, Lorenzo was so caught up in his life as a daring swashbuckler, he spent little time at home with his wife and children. He always believed there would be time for that when his adventures were done.
Then tragedy struck. An urgent message sent Lorenzo racing back to his villa in time to hold Antonia’s hand as she died in childbirth. Luckily, the doctors were able to rescue the infant and the grieving Lorenzo welcomed his little daughter Marienne into the world. Though he was nigh inconsolable, he realized how much precious time he’d squandered away from his family. Lorenzo vowed that he would not miss out on the important moments with his daughters. He retired from his life of adventure.
Lorenzo became the doting father that his girls needed, especially little Marienne. While her elder sisters became lively, intelligent young women, Marienne grew up sullen and sad. She blamed herself for her mother’s death and withdrew from everyone around her. Because of her isolation, it took Lorenzo some time to discover Marienne was hiding magical abilities, similar to her sisters.
