The Dancers
Written by Kiki
Once upon a time, there was a boy who lived in the night sky. Now the boy was alone in the darkness, no one but himself. So he whispered into his hands. Whispered dreams and wishes and love until finally a ball of light formed between his palms.
It was warm, and bright, and alive. He called it a star. Again and again he whispered until the sky was full of stars. Twinkling parts of his hopes and dreams. He laughed and danced amongst them but sometimes he still felt lonely.
One night he heard a voice. He looked down and saw a girl sitting on a cliff looking up to the sky. She was alone too. No one would listen and so she talked to the lonely night. The boy listened, even though she didn't mean to, she made him happy because he felt less alone. He listened to her story and her woes.
"I wish my mother would get better." She whispered to the sky and the boy, grateful for her company, reached out and took one of his stars.
"Your wish is granted." He whispers, sending the star down to the girl who stared in wonder. She ran home with the star and her mother was cured.
From that day on others would come to the cliff to whisper their woes to the night. The boy was not lonely anymore because people would come to see him, would tell him stories, then would thank him and leave with joy. With every wish he granted he would give one of his stars, a piece of himself. He wanted so badly to not be alone he hadn't realized it was dark again, he'd given away too much. Only one star was left, he could not give it away.
When he could no longer grant wishes the people stopped coming. He was alone again. Heartbroken and tired he cradled his last star. The last part of his hope.
Then a familiar voice called out. He looked. It was the girl, the first wish he granted. He was weary and held his last star close but he listened.
"I don't want you to be alone anymore. You granted so many wishes for others, listened to them and wanted nothing in return. You gave until you had nothing left to give. I've always loved you, loved your kindness, and your beautiful stars. So grant my wish, let me be with you in the sky so you won't be lonely anymore."
Touched by her words he gave her his last star, his last hope, and she joined him in the darkness of night. They embraced and laughed and their love made a new light. Their love made the moon and soon their laughter made new stars. Now they dance among their creations and sometimes, if your wish is pure, selfless, and true, they might grant it.
