Soothsayers
The Soothsayers, or Malphas Somniophage, are nightmarish entities that once dwelled in the abyssal depths of the Hollowdeep. These terrifying, parasitic creatures begin their existence as small, seemingly insignificant organisms, but their true horror unfolds as they burrow into a host. Slowly, they take over—consuming flesh, mind, and will—until nothing remains but a hollowed thrall, a puppet to their insidious desires.
Not all who are infected transform into these horrors. Some succumb to madness, plagued by visions beyond mortal comprehension. Others, overwhelmed by delusions of grandeur, come to believe themselves chosen by the darkness. Such was the fate of Veil’s father—once a man, but twisted by the infection into something far worse. Driven by a mind no longer his own, he sought to enslave the entire Hollowdeep, bending it to his will under the sway of the Malphas Somniophage.
They are called Soothsayers because speaking their true name would be to summon them to feast upon one's mind in the Hollowdeep.
Balen's Wish
Balen was one of the great heroes of the realm, a legend among those who had once stood against the Calamity. Alongside the Lost Wayfarers, he helped secure victory in Selenia, but the battle had cost him dearly. The Malphas Somniophage had been the final straw—monstrosities that had taken everything from him, including Veil’s father.
In his grief and fury, Balen shattered his celestial gift, a power few in the world had ever wielded. With it, he made a single, desperate wish: that the Malphas Somniophage had never existed and never would again. He wished for the corruption to end, for the Hollowdeep to be free of its horrors, and for no one to suffer as he had.
The universe stirred. Reality itself shifted. All knowledge, all memory, all record of the Malphas Somniophage was erased. The creatures were undone—not merely slain, but unmade. No histories spoke of them. No legends recalled their terror. To the world, they had simply never been.
No materials on them can be found in Selenia.
The Anomaly
There is but one person roaming the Selenian mainland who still carries a fragment of the Malphas Somniophage. A living contradiction, he alone remains touched by something that no longer exists.
He walks free, yet he is exiled. Banned from the City of Stars, he is deemed anathema by King Veil himself. His very presence is a threat—a lingering danger to the people of the Stars, a reminder of something that should have been erased.
And yet, despite the will of the universe, he endures. Xilqwyn
Basic Information
Anatomy
- Slightly blue-tinged and nearly see-through, revealing a shifting mass of pulsing organs beneath.
- When it moves, the bioluminescent organs flicker in patterns, possibly a form of communication.
- Roughly humanoid but too elongated, with long fingers that taper into sharp, segmented digits.
- Digitigrade legs, giving it a predatory, unnatural stance.
- Long hair that is actually tentaacles in deep shades of blue they often attach to vitims and implant pieces of themselvces into the host.
Tentacle Hair
- Deep blue, shifting in hues like a bioluminescent abyss. These prehensile appendages writhe as though alive, capable of extending outward. When they latch onto a victim, they implant slivers of the creature inside the host’s nervous system. Victims experience vivid, mind-breaking dreams, slowly becoming extensions of the creature’s will.
Eyes
- Large, slitted yellow orbs, no pupils, radiating a dim phosphorescent glow. When it locks eyes with prey, it can induce sleep paralysis and siphon dreams directly. The slits widen when it's actively feeding, revealing an eerie depth—like a black hole swallowing light.
Genetics and Reproduction
Reproduces through Infestation—it does not lay eggs but plants its essence into hosts. Over time, the infected will either mutate into lesser versions of the creature or be devoured entirely.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
- Dream Parasitism: Instead of physically consuming victims, it burrows into their subconscious, feeding on emotions, memories, and thoughts.
- Hypnotic Bioluminescence: The pulsing glow of its organs can mesmerize prey, lulling them into sleep-like trances.
- Cold to the Touch: Despite its bioluminescence, it radiates no warmth—victims often feel an overwhelming chill before it strikes
- Memory Corruption: Victims implanted with its tentacle shards slowly lose identity, becoming hollow shells until their minds fracture.
Well, these are terrifying. I am glad they are extinct... mostly?
