La Notte dei Sogni Infiniti, The Night of Infinite Dreams

Written by StillnessandSilence

La Notte dei Sogni Infiniti (The Night of Infinite Dreams)   Once a year, the people of Selenia and the surrounding islands gather to celebrate a magical event known as La Notte dei Sogni Infiniti or The Night of Infinite Dreams. This grand festival is marked by a series of enchanting festivities, but none are as captivating as the Masque at the Castle of Dreams, held in the mystical Point of Veil.

The Castle of Dreams

The Castle of Dreams, located in the Point of Veil in Selenia, is a breathtaking structure perched on a cliff overlooking the shimmering sea. Its ethereal beauty blurs the line between reality and dreams. The castle’s spires stretch towards the heavens, and its grand halls are steeped in legends, echoing whispers of wishes fulfilled and promises kept.

The Masque and Wish-Making Ritual

The evening of the festival is dedicated to the magical act of wish-making. Participants inscribe their dreams onto colorful folded papers, which are then tossed into a large, ornate ceramic basin. This sacred basin, adorned with celestial designs of stars and sigils, serves as a tribute to Tamahana, the revered Goddess of Night. Residing in the heart of the Castle of Dreams, the basin is accessible to all who wish to partake in this enchanting ritual.   At the Masque, the atmosphere is further elevated by mesmerizing ribbon dancers and acrobats who perform breathtaking routines. During their acts, they toss wish tokens—star-shaped coins—from the ceilings. Catching one of these tokens is believed to bring good fortune. These tokens can also be exchanged with the Wish Keeper for a blessing, adding an extra layer of mystique to the celebration.   Music fills the castle, echoing celestial harmonies that seem to blend with the stars themselves. The melodies provide a magical backdrop to the evening, while a grand feast prepared by renowned chefs of the realm offers guests a culinary experience befitting the occasion.   The Castle of Dreams is transformed each year into a setting of ethereal beauty, with decorations that dazzle and inspire awe. Velvet tapestries and silky drapes cascade along the walls, while golden stars and celestial motifs are placed throughout the halls. Glittering drinks, sparkling like stardust, are served to guests as they revel in the night’s enchantment.

Masques and Costumes

The festival attendees don elaborate masques, ranging from domino masks to full-face designs, and others inspired by butterflies, animals, or mythical creatures. Their costumes are equally detailed, rich in symbolism and artistry, adding to the festival's otherworldly charm.

Wishmaking

The paper used for crafting wishes is no ordinary parchment. It is meticulously handmade by artisans from the mystical Mothalisa, renowned for their spellbinding craft. Each sheet is infused with a special magic bestowed by the elves, making it a work of art as much as it is a vessel for dreams.   One side of the paper bears intricate designs, ranging from delicate floral patterns to elegant musical notes. These designs are said to carry symbolic meanings, adding another layer of thoughtfulness to the wish-making ritual. Before writing their wishes, participants are encouraged to carefully consider their choice of paper, as its design is believed to influence the energy and destiny of their dream.   The sheets are then cut into strips, maintaining the artistry and magic of the original design, ensuring that each wish is as unique and enchanting as the person who makes it

The Role of the Wish Keeper

Each year, the community selects a Wish Keeper to preside over the ceremony. This esteemed individual stirs the basin of wishes with a large paddle, offering prayers to Tamahana as they begin the ritual.   The Wish Keeper then carefully pulls out the first hundred wishes. These chosen wishes are considered blessed, and it is said that they are most likely to be granted. Following this, attendees are encouraged to take at least one wish from the basin to grant, provided it is within their means.   If fulfilling a wish is not possible, participants instead offer heartfelt prayers, invoking Tamahana’s guidance to help the wish-maker’s dream come true.

The Children’s Wish Celebration

A smaller, yet equally enchanting celebration is held early in the evening for the children of Selenia and the Islands. This event is a joyful and heartwarming occasion, where the wishes of the young are given special attention. The children, wide-eyed with wonder, make their wishes with bright, colorful folded papers, often hoping for simple joys like new toys, clothes, or good fortune for their loved ones.   This children's celebration is filled with laughter and play, as the young ones are guided through a lighter, more whimsical version of the traditional wish-making ritual. Wishes are carefully placed into a smaller, beautifully decorated basin, painted with playful designs of stars, moons, and whimsical creatures. The basin is situated in a cozy corner of the Castle of Dreams, where soft, twinkling lights illuminate the area, creating a sense of enchantment.   Unlike the grand evening celebration, where wishes are drawn by the Wish Keeper, during this time the children’s wishes are often granted right away, within reason. Local artisans and kind-hearted individuals are on hand to offer small gifts, from hand-carved toys to colorful clothing, fulfilling the dreams of the children. The air is filled with the sounds of soft laughter, music, and the delighted gasps of children as their wishes come true.   This event serves as a reminder of the innocence and hope of youth, with a sense of joy and fulfillment that lingers in the hearts of all who participate.

A Night of Magic and Reverence

La Notte dei Sogni Infiniti is more than just a celebration; it is a night of unity, hope, and wonder. It binds the people of Selenia in shared reverence for dreams, both personal and collective, under the watchful gaze of the celestial goddess who lights their path. Many places have different names for this night Sernade of Stars, The Wishing night, Stars Vigil and Tamhana's Grace.
