Vampires Species in The Veil | World Anvil

Vampires

I've spoken to many a Duskin, they are fascinating in their abilities as well as their beliefs but are very stubborn. I once argued the specifics of an vitan algorithm with one, they refused to believe that I, a mere human, even had the capacity to understand its complexities even though I talked circles around them.
— Keeper Haiba, He Who Speaks

Vampires, also known as Duskin, are the children of Dusk created to help him bring eternal night. They are powerful nocturnal beings with natural abilities akin to Umbrae, for whom Dusk drew inspiration from in their creation. Vampires are also able to practice Blood Magic with less consequences due to their affinity for blood.

Long-lived and stuck in time is how most vampires are, many can come off as stubborn or stuck in their ways, but vampires are as varied as humans in personality and morality. Most live in the Scarlet Dominion on the eastern portion of the continent where the nights are a longer and where the reach of the Kingdom and the Church is stunted.

Every vampire lives with powerful abilities as well as powerful restrictions known as strictures. Some strictures are commonly shared amongst all vampires while others can be more unique or less wide-spread. Sunlight vulnerability and blood thirst are two common strictures, while rite of entry is less common. Even with these abilities and strictures, vampires have had a tenuous life on the Veil, struggling to survive the Kingdom, the Church, lycans and the day.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Most vampires are unable to reproduce natrually, save for those with the ability to mimic human biological functions. Vampires instead turn humans into vampires in order to reproduce. In the first Era this was only done with full consent as the humans and vampires lived harmoniously.

Growth Rate & Stages

Vampires are immortal, they live forever as one of their gifts from Dusk.

Ecology and Habitats

All vampires are susceptible to sunlight, which causes instant death and dusting. Therefore places of darkness are their natural habitat.

Behaviour

Many would assume vampires are inherently evil beings however this is far from the truth. Just like humans they vary in moral standing and cover the gambit of emotions. They are deadly beings but not all vampires weild their power as a cudgel.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Some duskin are gifted with enhanced senses, allowing them to see further, hear whispers, smell individual ingredients, feel small details, etc. If a duskin has the ability to shapeshift into animals then they will commonly have the animal's natural abilities for their own.
