Blood Tokens Item in The Veil | World Anvil

Blood Tokens

"Stop moaning and put on the damn shirt. Yes it's a bit sticky and you will reek of metal but how else are you going to shield yourself against an ori laced attack?"
— Dominion Vitan to a subordinate

Blood Tokens are essential tools used by vitans, someone who practices blood magic, that allow for activation of a blood formula without having to pen the formula on the spot. A token can be made from any non-living object but they are typically on the smaller size in order to conceal them on one's person.

Purpose

Penning a blood formula takes time and resources which are still required in the creation of a blood token, however blood tokens are usually portable and therefore the activation of a formula is able to be done anywhere the token is. Tokens can vary greatly, many vitans will carry tokens that are disguised as simple coins, jewerlery, clothing, and sometimes even food.

Production

Creation of a blood token is one of the first formula modifiers that a vitan learns. Using the specified modifier will shift any blood formula into a blood token formula. The effect of the original formula will remain the same but it will not be activated until willed to do so. This is a time consuming task given that a vitan must spend the same amount of time and resources on the original formula then add the modifier. The convience of using the formula any time and any where is why the use of blood tokens is very popular.

Activation

Blood tokens are very simply to activate if one knows that they are in posession of one. However activating a token that was not penned by you can be fatal. Only the original creator knows what the effect of a token is and therefore it is highly advised to never activate a token without knowing what will happen.

Activation requires two things, blood and intent. Typically the amount of blood needed is enough to complete the original blood formula and like a circuit once completed if the intent is present then the effect happens. There are augmentation formulas that can alter activation in various ways, such as delaying activation or setting a trigger condition.
