The Palti

The first heralds of the coming destruction were a caravan of refugees who fled before the army. These poor souls had been on the move for over ten years, hailing from the coastal cities far to the west. As Caius welcomed them to the safety of his keep, they warned him that the fortification would do little to slow the destruction of the Longostan advance. It would only be a few months later that scouts of the invaders would be seen in the region.   Kiran Blackwell-Biography of Lord Fenton Caius

Pre-Invasion

The Palti hailed from the Western coast where foothills spilled into the ocean, creating the Selshall Archipelago. They were seafaring people, with their merchant ships traveling as far as the southern ice fields and beyond the northern tip. When the Longostan armies spilled through the western passes, the Palti were some of the first to fall. However, many escaped in ships and maintained naval superiority over the invaders for years.

Flight to the Interior

One of the groups that escaped south-east by land were dogged by misfortune. Whenever they found a place to rest, within half the year they would be forced to flee once again by the encroaching Longostan armies. They were eventually trapped against the southern reaches of the mountains. It was here that they took refuge in the keep of Lord Fenton Caius. With their assistance he formulated a plan to escape into the mountains, deciding to risk the uncertain crossing over certain defeat at the hands of the invaders.

The Valley

There were several Palti in the expeditionary force that stumbled across the valley. At first they thought they had made it through the mountains, but careful recounting of their path showed they had made it less than halfway through the range.   During the tumultuous first decade after the discovery of the valley, the Palti generally supported Caius. Their knowledge of boat building was integral to Caius' plans. Finally, after years of strife and exhaustion, the Palti moved to the Great Lake and settled on the group of islands in the southern quarter. Their descendants live there to this day, fishing across the lake and running trade ship on the River Lifien.
