Free Settlement of Kirria

A large asteroid measuring 500km across, the Free Settlement of Kirria is a former asteriod mining colony turned into a functioning, independent society. The Settlement has very little in terms of a government, and as such is a haven for pirates, mercenaries, smugglers and other criminals to conduct their trades in relative safety. Peace is generally kept through the rule of mutual destruction: unrestricted access to uranium and other dangerous elements means that untracked nuclear weapons are positioned all over the system, and any particular crime syndicate or family has to be careful how they conduct themselves, lest the whole colony be wiped out. It is this same risk that keeps the Settlement independent: with so many dangerous weapons active and ready to fire, no commander from the Sirasion Empire or Galactic rebels would want to assault the world.   Despite the danger, around 3 million people live on or around the asteroid, many of whom are forced to learn how to survive in such a harsh environment. Many skilled pilots renowned throughout the sector began their careers here, as freight crews and escorts. The asteroid also plays host to a thriving subculture of hackers and tech experts, specialising in aquiring digital informaton that is just as (if not more) valuable than any physical item.   5 large criminal organisations call this place home, and represent the closest thing the Settlement has to a government. These include the Verista Aquisitions Corporation, the Red Dwarf Pirates, Nerici Crime Family, Humber Chemical Company, and Fradar Shipping Organisation. Each of the 'Big Five' have significant influence on both the goings on in the settlement and in illicit activity throughout the subsector, but circumstances in the Settlement can change very quickly, and new players can step in and take over others in a very short amount of time.
