Battlegroup 17 "Hunter"
The Alliance Navy's Battlegroup 17 is the task force assigned the role of hunting Bashi, currently under the command of Alec Fellhammer. It is the most active battlegroup in the alliance military, but despite this is not the size of a full battlefleet. Typically comprising of around 18 ships of the line, 12 non-combat support ships and a classified number of stealth craft, Battlegroup 17 is a lean but highly coherent force. The battlegroup has often been the testing bed for the newest in alliance tech and ship design, being the first sighting of the Duelist and Hurricane classes in Alliance service.
The Battlegroup's flagship, the Neptune-class battlecruiser Skathi, has been in service since the end of the war, and has been constantly upgraded and updated by both official alliance dockyards and other non-alliance shipwrights, mostly at the behest of her commander, Alec. Her after-service upgrades include custom turret mounts with a 30% faster turn rate, additional maneuvering and braking thrusters and an electronic warfare/hacking suite.
The exact composition of the fleet can vary, and AI operates a few ships under the battlegroup that aren't publicly released, but the fleet typically operates with 2 or 3 battlecruisers, 6 or 7 cruisers and the rest filled out with frigates or light frigates.
A few assault ships with marines, dropships and an assortment of ground vehicles round out the fleet, providing the ability to enact a small planetary invasion or a devestating boarding action.
All strike craft are equipped with hyperdrives to increase operational flexibility, and most are capable of some measure of stealth.
Battegroup 17's chief objective is the hunt for bashi, but it often finds itself assigned other tasks that are best utilised by an elite and fast-responding task force. Only the top 1% of alliance naval graduates are considered for assignment to the battlegroup, but the officers often go on to command other battlegroups utilising smilar tactics and organisational processes. Slowly but surely, the status of Battlegroup 17 is filtering out into the galaxy, providing a high standard to adhere to.
