Soul Curse

MATT: Through the two of you conversing over this, there are simple curses that can be imparted for a temporary period of time, usually as some sort of a penance to someone who slighted you. Some that are part of a corruption on the land, a blight that spreads to a life source. And there are soul curses. Usually where someone feels so wronged in their final moments that they basically burn their soul and any possibility of the afterlife purely to scourge whoever was responsible for their pain. It's rarely ever done, because it is essentially accepting oblivion. Your existence is done.

The gods don't hold any sway over your immortal soul; there is no afterlife. However, you die knowing, for whatever that means in that brief moment, that you have scarred the individual in some degree for possibly the rest of time.

Something to note here. Not even sure how relevant it could be, but the Raven Queen is the first person that gets souls after they die, then passing them forward from there. Something about that just sticks out to me when I see "the gods don't hold any sway". Makes me feel like these sorts of curses COULD be related to subverting divine will in the afterlife more broadly. Although, that's pure speculation, it could also just be the more intuitive answer that there is no soul to have sway over and that this was just colorful language.
