Uvalina
The Vine Maiden
Sometimes, in the vineyards of the floating island of Tarador, someone sees a strange woman walking among the grapevines. Sometimes, people find themselves following her, with most never knowing why. Sometimes, these people are never seen again, or return forever changed.
This creature is Uvalina, the Vine Maiden. She is the fey queen of wine and its intoxicating properties. Hers is a domain of wild passions and reckless abandon. Many find themselves drawn to her, and few are able to tear themselves away.
Physical Description
Body Features
The Vine Maiden is a creature of breathtaking beauty. Anyone who looks upon her find themselves drawn to her regardless of their usual sexual orientation. Some have even seen her in their dreams after catching the briefest glimpse of her.
She has a healthy tan complexion, and an attractive curvaceous form. Her flowing black hair is framed by a pair of ram's horns. One of her eyes is a the deep purple of red grapes while the other is the pale green of white grapes. She wears only a flowing, low-cut dress with delicate grapevines growing on it.
Special abilities
As with many other archfey, the exact abilities of the Vine Maiden are something of a mystery. Legends told by the Taradori claim any number of very potent and very dramatic powers. Unfortunately, just like other tales told by the Taradori, there is very little consistency, making any kernel of truth very hard to find.
Like her servants, the vine nymphs, she is thought to be able to project an aura of intoxication at will. Indeed, few who encounter her actually remember the experience. They frequently wake up hung over after any amount of time from seconds to years with no memory of what occurred.
In addition, not all who wake up after meeting her wake up in the same form as they had when they first met Uvalina. Sometimes, a man may wake up female, or sometimes one who follows her might gain fey features such as horns, pointed ears, or even small butterfly wings. It is believed by many that being in the Vine Maiden's presence gradually turns one into a vine nymph, but this is not known.
One thing that is known that she possesses the power to twist the hearts and minds of those she meets, a power common to many fey. Indeed, there are many stories of people being called to her from anywhere in Tarador or seeing her in their dreams when they lay their heads to rest.
Domain
The Vine Maiden's domain rests across the great boundary in the Feywild. There, the reflection of the entire city of Corazon serves as her home. It is a grand sight, something between a palace and a garden. The buildings, made too seamlessly and delicately to have been built by mortal hands, are connected by verdant corridors lined with grapevines and intoxicating flowers. This place is home only to Uvalina with her favored servants and pets. Surrounding the palace are fields of grapes, much as Corazon is in the Material Plane. That, however, is where the similarities end. Where these fields would be overseen by the manors of vintners, palaces made of grapevines stand. The palaces are overseen by Uvalina's favorite vine nymphs, and many more of the lovely creatures carefully tend the fields outside. The fey grapes that grow on these fields bear a twinkling inner glow, making the rows of grapevines a breathtaking sight in the eternal twilight of the Feywild. Some say any who eat these grapes or drink their wine will never feel pain again. Others, that any who taste them will lose themselves forever.Mental characteristics
Personal history
It is said that the fey are truly timeless beings, with no beginning and no true end. If a creature like the Vine Maiden is ever truly born, none has ever seen it, and no fey has ever given an answer when asked. Uvalina the Vine Maiden is no exception to this, having been known for as long as people have lived on the floating island of Tarador.
Only one story exists of her past, told and retold by the people of Tarador. The details vary greatly and contain the same level of dramatic flourish common to the Taradori people. None know if this story is even partially true, and if asked the Vine Maiden only laughs.
The story goes that after humans first landed on the island, the Vine Maiden took an interest in them and watched them from afar. As the people laid the first stones that would become Puerto Azul, it is said she fell deeply in love with one of them. She then called to this person, who was drawn further inland, where none had yet traveled.
Who this person was is very inconsistent from telling to telling. In some versions, it was a noble knight. In others, a dashing thief. There are seemingly endless versions of this person, from a beggar to a simple fisherman's daughter. If the Vine Maiden is ever asked about this, she changes the subject right away.
Whoever this person was, it is said they met in the heart of the island. Before sharing so much as a single word, they shared a kiss on a hill overlooking grand fields. The Vine Maiden then taught her love how to grow the first grapes and make the first wine. When they created Tarador's first vineyard, their prosperity inspired others to settle nearby, creating the city of Corazon.
What happened to the Vine Maiden's lover varies wildly. Sometimes, Uvalina found another and the rivalry between the two suitors destroyed them both. In other versions, they remained separate by their different worlds, and the vintner pined for their otherworldly love until their death. Finally, some tellings have this lover going into the Vine Maiden's realm and staying at her side for all eternity.
Personality
It can be hard to define the Vine Maiden's personality. In some ways, she can be cold and aloof. She rarely shows herself to those who don't spark her interest. Occasionally, she walks among the vineyards of Tarador, but no more than a glimpse of her is seen. Most don't even believe reports of these sightings. Those mortals who do catch her eye see a far different side to her. To them, she is playfully seductive. She calls to them, drawing them in, but when they get close she leads them on an impossible chase through the grapevines. Finally, when they do get to her, they find themselves led to her realm where they experience her wild hedonistic side, joining her in her impossible revels. She is, however, quite fickle. Rarely does a mortal hold her attention for long. No matter how deep her affection, and no matter how far away her paramours are called from, more often than not, they find themselves waking up among the grapevines with the worst hangover they had ever experienced.
