The Warrens

All those who travel to the deepest subterranean depths will hear whispers in their mind and experience the sensation of the walls themselves watching. This is the work of the mind flayers and they are always hungry for brains or slaves.

Geography

What are known to the mind flayers as "these warrens where we wait" are a twisting, turning hell of claustrophobic tunnels occasionally interrupted by chambers of every size imaginable. The endless tunnels of the Warrens are lying in wait beneath the surface of both Amaun and Kirris like an unimaginably vast ant hive.   This is effectively a world all on its own filled with lakes, waterways, and even seas. Larger chambers are said to be filled with fungal forests teeming with a life of its own. Rumors told by adventurers state that there are ruins untouched since before the coming of the mind flayers, containing treasures unseen by the world above.

Fauna & Flora

This place is dominated by the mind flayers and all humanoid beings, such as deep gnomes and stone giants are their servants. It is said there are communities of these people that have broken away from them and gained their free will, but if any have seen them, they are not telling. Most recently, twisted mockeries of dwarves have been seen serving the mind flayers.   Only two groups of sentient species are able to avoid their influence. The first is the beholders. Their individual power and solitary nature makes them not worth the trouble to enslave. The second is the mysterious myconids. The fungus-folk lack brains to be devoured and their minds are too alien for even the mind flayers to dominate. Instead they are merely written off as irrelevant.   These dangerous tunnels are also home to many less intelligent beings as well. Among these are umber hulks, birdles, ropers, and cave fishers. These creatures feed not only on one another, but also on those travelers foolish enough to stray into these depths.
