Empire of Triton

Due to the nature of undersea life, true nations are almost nonexistent. Society is instead dominated by independent city-states such as Mir'assen or Calamand. There is one exception that proves the rule: the Empire of Triton.

Structure

The Empire of Triton is a true monarchy, ruled by the Imperial House Lovre. Before each emperor or empress dies, they choose one of their children to rule after them. There are no laws or traditions regarding the sex or birth order of the child in question.   There is a very clear-cut hierarchy to the noble houses of the empire. If House Lovre has no heir, the patriarch or matriarch of the next house in in succession becomes the new ruler. The surname of that person and their heirs then changes to Lovre.

History

The triton people have their origins on the Plane of Water. By their own oral history, they were created for the purpose of combating the evil creatures of the depths. When they discovered the Material Plane, they saw an opportunity to pursue that purpose in a location that had never had the benefit of their presence.   It is well recorded by history that they first came to Amaun by way of an elemental vortex called the Gate of Lost Tears. On a nondescript place on the seafloor not far away they created their first city: Vrd-Kalron and immediately started preparing for war.   They discovered the sahuagin early and, horrified by their actions, they attacked. Ever since the two kingdoms have been in a state of constant war. Both have expanded their influence, and both have had their victories and defeats, but their battles have remained constant.   For a reason that is completely mysterious to all, the current sahuagin king, Icktrik has pulled his troops away from the empire. Whatever his plans, the only thing that is known is that his intentions aren't peaceful.

Demography and Population

As the name suggests, the vast majority of the empire's population is made up of tritons. Non-tritons are present, however, and are often granted full citizenship. They might have immigrated for the greater security or for personal opportunity. Conversely, many tritons have left to live elsewhere, most often due to the lack of personal freedom.

Military

Triton society is very martial, capable of mobilizing all citizens when required. Even so, the empire does maintain a force of full-time soldiers. These warriors are among the best rank-and-file in all the seas and are supplemented by mages from the academy in Vrd-Kalron.

Foreign Relations

The empire had a very well-deserved reputation for being militaristic. They believe it is their responsibility to protect other races from the evil creatures of the deep. Unfortunately, this "protection" often comes at the cost of freedom and autonomy, making it essentially a conquest.   The tritons' efforts are primarily due to a deep, unabiding hatred for the sahuagin. They've campaigned against the shark-folk's kingdom ever since their exodus from the Plane of Water.

Trade & Transport

As the empire lives in a constant war economy, it doesn't see much in the way of trade. Raw materials and basic necessities are produced by imperial farmers and miners, and the finished products are produced by imperial artisans.   Often these supplies aren't enough to meet their very demanding needs. In these circumstances the empire will simply annex a useful community. These activities are generally ignored by the Dawn Sea at large so long as the tritons keep the sahuagin in check.
