The World Tree

The World Tree is a huge imposing structure that looms over the entirety of the Material Plane. A staggeringly big and ancient oak tree it pierces through the mists and even on the days when they are the thickets its shadow sweeps across the city.
The base of the tree has been surrounded with short buildings where the original settlers started erecting houses to protect themselves from the forest and the mists. These are mostly inhabited by the towns few guards and their families.
The tree itself has a staircase carved into it which is its most distinctive feature. The staircase winds up around the outside such that anyone climbing it can see out over the city. The stairs seems to climb forever and the tree extends hundreds of meters into the air, but the journey takes varying amounts of time.
While climbing the stairs the world shifts and bubbles and changes, rainbows of light and strange sounds wrap around people, power peaks and fades. Eventually on reaching the top of the tree a strange sight greats those strong enough to make it; a small island with houses in a ring and a valley of mists around them. This island is The Fey Courts in the Feywilds but the two worlds are closest linked here and overlap more than they don't.
The tree canopy is visible and stretches around you with perilous gaps between the further out branches, but where there are gaps in the Material plane of the tree there is land in the Feywilds. Someone skilled or powerful can navigate the two planes with ease to switch to the most convenient, someone lesser mayb find themselves pushed to a plane by an outside force and falling.
