The Barracks

The Barracks of Colcahir are an anachronism to the modern city. The city guard were once the battalion of soldiers the Founder's bought with them to protect their caravans. They learnt the ways of the forest brutally by trial and error, losing many of their number, before they became to be considered the experts in navigating the dangers.   Years later as the Covens began to rise to power, particularly The Watching Coven, there became less and less need for the guard. They failed to keep up with the abilities of the Witches at navigating, keeping the dark at bay, and eventually at protecting the city.   Now the guard, once over a hundred strong, comprises of a megre handful of soldiers whose main duties are to monitor the gates and docks.   The Barracks themselves reflect this history; once grand, imposing, castle-like structures, they show the wear and tear of history. The building is crumbling, the windows broken in many places, the grounds overgrown, the entrance permanently propped open as the portcullis has long since broken.   The only activity are the guards coming and going, entering and spending their free time, and leaving for their shift.   The building is structed to be well fortified, reminiscent of its past. There is a large drawbridge that, while it doesn't cross a moat, serves to protect the gates. Behind this is a portcullis and two large oak doors bound and riveted in cold iron. Through the gateway is a short passage lined with arrow slots before another portcullis and a small open courtyard. The space is flanked by two squat but wide towers which are the bulk of the fort. Each tower has a small door at the base of it, the left being the main sleeping areas and the right being storage, eating areas, kitchens, and tactical spaces. Both descend under the ground to a series of chambers that connect them which comprise a rough dungeon and some more secure store rooms.
