Winnu

The Winnu system lies within the midst of the Core Systems, relatively close to the Coreward Gate. The planet Winnu has a very diverse climate and geology. Much of the world is covered in sandy and rocky deserts, some of which extend to the poles. This contrasts with the equally widespread rugged landforms thick with vegetation and animal species. The planet’s north pole and about one third of the northern hemisphere remain covered in ice thanks to a slowly receding ice age.

There are no major oceans on Winnu. The largest bodies of water equate to large inland seas on other worlds. In the more hospitable regions, woodlands and rainforests thrive. Most of the water lies beneath the surface in underground waterways, flooded caverns, and cenotes.

Not all wastelands—whether desert or arid—are completely natural. Some are scars from wars of Winnu’s ancient past, before embracing Lazax philosophy. Terraforming has restored some areas with limited success. However, the destruction didn’t strip all former battlegrounds of life. Sometimes life was drastically altered instead, such as in the Paroutrel region.

Winnu’s bright and elegant cities still extensively showcase the Lazax and Lazax-inspired designs. The Winnu belief that they are the true Lazax successors drives them to enshrine the past and build new structures based on ancient ideas as examples of their sincerity. However, the Winnu also like to show how their art and culture has evolved beyond the Winnaran traditions, so new ideas often stand alongside the old. They are sometimes called the “shining cities” due to their use of reflective and bright materials that glow in the sunlight and to their use of dramatic artificial lighting at night.

Paroutrel

The Paroutrel region is a continent-sized area where the vegetation has taken on deep red and brown colors due to mutations caused by chemical warfare thousands of years ago. The plants are aggressively invasive and, if left unchecked, could destroy Winnu’s carefully reconstructed biosphere. Winnu biologists hold back the spread, but they often call in off-world bio experts when new growth surges occur. The Paroutrel is a continual reminder of what ancient Winnu attitudes and ambition can lead to.

The Nezuurux

The Nezuurux is also known as the Lazax Promenade. Built in honor of Winnu’s admission into the Lazax Empire, the Nezuurux is a series of mighty towers topped with blindingly bright beacons. The beacons are placed in pairs at intervals of several kilometers, while the promenade extends for thousands of kilometers across the continent. The promenade provided a formal, celebrated approach for Lazax state visits. It is maintained today and used on special occasions. The beacon pairs are masterworks of art and architecture celebrating different aspects of Lazax guidance.

Aranin

Winnu’s capital city sits at one end of the Nezuurux, perched on the edge of the mighty Aree Canyon. The capital showcases everything the Winnu have believed to be great about the Lazax Empire, and it still boasts some ancient buildings and ruins from that time. Much of the city is clad in bright metal panels, whether examples of minimalist Lazax interpretations or gaudy and overdone late imperial styles. The capitol complex, Mauron, is a mix of new and ancient imperial styling in keeping with the Winnu’s claims and aspirations to the throne.
