The Tale of Treachery and Betrayal

There once was a goddess of tranquility who sought peace for all mortalkind. Her world was thrown into chaos. The oceans were red with blood and the land wept with decay. Death and destruction lay waste to the world as two peoples clashed...

Summary

This story tells the tale of an unnamed goddess who grew tired of the war in which her people were slaughtered. It describes the ruinous conditions of the war and how it was awful for both sides of the conflict. This goddess primeval, a goddess of peace and tranquility so the story claims, searched out an audience with the gods of the other warring faction.   She plead for the lives of her people that they might make peace lest the world they fought over be destroyed and there be nothing left to show for all the bloodshed. After much consideration, the four gods of the enemy agreed to this treatise with their sister and her fellow gods. And so a period of ceasefire was attained.   The two warring peoples met where the two continents joined. They held their peace talks on the highest mountain peak so as to be closer to their gods and their gods closer to their peoples. On the third day of the peace talks, the treachery of the goddess' enemies was revealed. During the ceasefire their enemies moved to ambush key locations and important cities. The goddess watched the wholesale slaughter of the people she wished to save with peace. The pain this loss caused the goddess elicited a tear mixed with blood. And then came the betrayal.   An immense pain struck the goddess. She looked down to find the blade of her fellow god's weapon piercing her heart. A second tear of blood fell from the goddess' face, landing upon the mortal world. Though they were her brothers and sisters, they betrayed her for their own mortal worshippers.   Some say it was the blow from a fellow god that felled the goddess of peace. Others say the pain of her kin's betrayal shattered her heart and killed her. All agree that she had to watch, tears streaming down her face, as her beloved mortals and fellow gods primeval were massacred on that mountaintop where they had once sued for peace.   In her last moments, the goddess of peace and tranquility, though she had never raised her hand to harm another being throughout her life, let drop her last tears to fall upon the mortal world and take the form of the weapon that slew her in order to aid her people in the war for their survival. Treachery and Betrayal.

Historical Basis

The tale of Treachery and Betrayal, mythical weapons of Pre-Yesteryear Plague age, is one of the oldest extant written documents. Latest archaeological discoveries on the Synnivar Isthmus give credence to a battle that had occurred on those lands. Whether or not those remains are the result of the battle spoken of in Treachery and Betrayal specifically is up to debate. What with the Resurgences throughout history past, battle is not an uncommon sight on Oara.   The issue of the conflict, however, is one of mystery. What the nature of the war was still remains at large. It is assumed that, because there is mention of gods worshipped on either side of the conflict, there were no Volden acting as belligerents. All that is told to the reader is that a war of massive proportions occurred and incurred heavy losses on either sides.    Another point of contention on the historical validity of the myth is the exact nature of the weapons in question: Treachery and Betrayal. There is no information given on what exact form these supposed weapons took, where they might be located, or what they might do. Scholars have postured that they might be prehistoric fabergés, but most of the wider academic community dismisses this notion. The most popular theory currently is that they are relics retrieved from the Tower itself at an early stage of exploration.

Spread

The myth is commonly told in the eastern reaches of the Mekar Ascendancy to the west of the Ruins of Synn. It is not a well known story in the Citadel Coalition but most Citarii scholars of note, especially those with ties to the Conservatory, know it well. It is rumored that the Conservatory, located in the city of Teimor at the base of the Tower, is currently in possession of the original stone carving of the Tale of Treachery and Betrayal. Where it was found originally is uncertain, but many surmise that it was first located in the Mekar Ascendancy. How this ancient passage came into their possession is unknown.
