Needle

Consisting of a short silver-metallic staff with a circlet on one end and a sharp point at the other, Needles enable their user to communicate over long distances with any other Needle user with whom they may have a link. They have two functions, a user who threads their arm through the hoop will find themselves lucidly dreaming and will be able to hear any messages or leave messages for others or communicate directly if the other person is also using a Needle at the same time.

When communicating with another individual their voice is distorted and unrecognisable, and it is never possible to see or look at your counterpart. Nor is it possible to include multiple people in the conversation, all communications via the needles are between two parties.

The second function is used to establish new links and performed by holding a single piece of Io in your hand and pricking yourself using the sharp end of the Needle. This consumes the Io and some of the operators blood to produce a Thread. Threads can then be passed on and ingested by another party to establish a new connection.
