Half-Orc

As it is in most wars, the greater part of the suffering from an orc raid or invasion is not borne by the fighting men, but by the innocents massacred, displaced, and robbed in the wake of armies and raiding bands. The exceedingly cruel orcs go farther: they are known to employ the most dastardly acts as a matter of course, to spread terror and inflict more lasting pain. From their rapacious violence, the half-orcs were born. Centuries removed from the last large-scale orc invasion, most orcen are not the product of these unholy couplings, but the offspring of half-orc clans and tribes and somewhat less than one-half orc.   The orcen have inherited some of the physical characteristics of their ancestors. They are, on average, taller, stronger, and more sexually dimorphous than humans. Their teeth are sharper and more pronounced, and their foreheads slanted. Whether it is another inheritance or the expectations of their upbringing, half-orcs are particularly prone to violence and physical competition. In villages and cities, people fear and distrust half-orcs, but if their anger is tempered by discipline they can make the best, most motivated soldiers in the world.   Half-orcs tend to form clans and tribes of their own kind in nations on the brutal edge of civilization, ironically often becoming those places' first line of defense against orc incursions. These orcen polities develop customs of adopting lone half-orcs born to human women and cast out of society, raising them as sons and daughters in even the highest households. Despite their orc heritage, these most violent of peoples often show the most remarkable charity.
