Personal history

Soth has always been seen as something of an oddity - the Kinfolk Realm is known for being extremely peaceful and abundant, making its native people culturally friendly and laid-back. Herbs are, of course, a matter of great importance to the kinfolk - gardening competitions and bakeoffs tend to be as intense a conflict as one can find in the realm.    And for kid drawn to the macabre, a very dull place to live.    Soth was born before their time - and it was fear they would not survive. So their mother Yado Tiar prayed Thova, the kinfolk Goddess of Death and Poison, asking her not to spare the child but rather treat them kindly. Thova, intrigued, appeared before the woman in disguise to ask why she would make such a prayer. Yado Tiar was a poison eater - a profession that regularly ingested poisons so that if a new plant was discovered, they could determine if it was poisoned and if it were delicious enough to look for a way to get rid of the poison. This often left members of her profession unable to bear children - but bear one she had, and as a humble poisoneater of no great renown, Yado Tiar felt asking the gods for two miracles would be asking for trouble.    Many kinfolk tales of the gods involved a mortal asking for too much when they had already been granted a bounty - so this fear was not unfounded.    Thova, however, was moved - she told Yado Tiar to bring the babe to her temple, though veiled the request as advice. She told the already grieving mother to put the child into the arms of the statue, so that Thova would know them from others. To the saddened and at the time inhebriated Yado Tiar, this seemed sound indeed.    So Yado Tiar returned home and fetched her tiny babe, and brought them to the Temple of Soth and placed them in her arms as suggested before praying once more that the goddess would be kind to her child.    Thova sent her familiar, the snake Nottang, to carry out her will - the snake pricked the babe's finger with a fang, which caused the Mark of the Serpant to appear on Soth's small arm. Yado Tiar knew the sign immediately - Thova had Chosen her child, and that divine favor would give them strength. Grateful, Yado Tiar was ever more faithful to her patron goddess.    With such an impressive origin, it was no surprise Soth themself grew up with a fascination for death. Like their mother, they trained as a poinson eater - though with Thova's Favor, their immunity was much more potentant. They even enjoyed the taste of poisons in their own right, though they would be far from the first poison eater to develop such an appetite. Had they simply a fascination for poisons, though, most would have written it off as typical poison eater oddity.    But Soth was intrigued by more - by death in all its facets. They collected the bones of small animals to make jewelry, and waxed poetic about the ways that a particular poison brought about an untimely end. The townsfolk thought this was quite inappropriate - most of the time, they preferred not to think of death at all, and this odd youngster took any opportunity to bring it up. Despite the social disapproval, though, Yado Tiar never discouraged them - after all, why would they not be fascinated by the domain of the goddess that had saved their life?   When they grew old enough, Soth decided to travel to other realms - there was more poison in the Thirteen Realms than just kinfolk flora, and they were determined to try it all. Yado Tiar wished them well - overjoyed to see her child off as an adult.    But Soth discovered that poisons were not regarded so casually in other realms as in their home. One of the first poison dealers they attempted to do business with in the Human Realm attempted to kidnap them - not having counted on their blessed immunity. But Soth gained a companion out of the experience - an elven ash cobra, with deadly venom and a cicular life cycle. It would be forever reborn - and Soth named it Ember.    The incident put them in the sights of an assassin's guild - and with the promise of access to more poisons, Soth ready joined them. The added bonus of proximity to death appealed to them as well, though poisons remained their first love. They earned the professional alias of "Pinprick" - for they were known for their ability to get close to a target and drop them with only the smallest amount of poison.    When they got bored of the guild, they went freelance - and while the lower ranked members were upset by this, the upper ranks were relieved. While they appreciated Soth's skills, they too feared their sheer passion for poisons - especially eating them themself.    As Soth traveled the realms in search of ever more potent and intriguing poisons, they contented themself with the belief that someone as close to death as they were was simply not meant for strong friendships or romance - they had their ever loving and supportive mother, they had Ember, they had Thova, and they poisons.    So when they stumbled upon a group of plant enthusists in Jost on their way to visit home, all eager to hear about their own expertise without judgement, they were both pleased and surprised to find a place where they could be themself.

This is a super intriguing response to the prompt, and just has a cool backstory in general! I am curious - is Soth still an assassin, or have they given up the profession upon meeting up with the plant enthusiasts?

Thank you! They're still an assassin, but consider it more of a hobby to fund their poison hunting than anything else
