Taco Bell is the oldest megacorporation to still exist. It is also the most tightly focused – only operating in a single market sector. However, when it comes to food there are few competitors that even exist, let alone challenge their market share. From farm to table, depot store, restaurants, and space port food stalls – nearly everything is Taco Bell.
The reason for this dominance dates back to when humanity was a TL 7 civilization confined to Terra. In the late 20th century AD and early 21st century AD following a series of disastrous attempts at central planning governance; humanity found itself at the brink of extinction. The period known as the resource wars saw mass chaos as factions and desperate individuals raided the few resources that remain from the bureaucratic incompetence and arrogance of the time.
In a desperate bid to save humanity, Corporations consolidated with their competitors and partnered with military leaders around the world to rapidly liberate the world. Their efforts resulted in the first mercantile Imperium of man, and progenitor of the Third Imperium that promotes peace and prosperity throughout the known universe today.
As for why Taco Bell continues to exist today, CHOAM economists and INGSOC historians have postulated it is due the ‘solved’ nature of food. The other megacorporations of the time were the unifications of the Media, Technology, and Military-Industrial sectors. These sectors must be inherently innovative and creative, media must entertain and inform un the current trends, technology can always be tweaked and improved, and bombs can always be more destructive and versatile. Food however, seems hardwired into the human condition. Humanity has been eating the same recipes for millennia. Even the novelties that InGen discovers or resurrects are still made into steaks, burgers, sausages, and even the humble taco.
The official Taco Bell branded restaurants would be unrecognizable to pre resource war humanity. They are fine dining establishments for the rich and famous. Individuals below the social standing of a Navy captain (SOC 10+) would feel horrifyingly out of place amongst the decadence. The food produced on Taco Bell contract farms finds its way to other Taco Bell owned restaurants whose brands are more approachable in both status and price for the common man.
The current CEO is a Vargr named Gidget Alazraqui. Having aliens in the upper executive positions of megacorporations is not unusual, however it is unique to have a CEO be an alien. Investors were initially concerned with a CEO born outside of the Third Imperium taking over, and certainly one as prestigious and ancient as Taco Bell. These fears soon subsided in the absence of any seditious action, and has opened the door for more aliens to rise to the highest positions in the third estate in the decades since Gidget began her tenure.
