Vasilisa, Tyrant of the Tides

Vasilisa was once the free spirited goddess of the seas, but the events of the Great Sundering hardened her heart, and have led to her becoming the Tyrant of the Tides, a harsh and icy goddess who demands complete obedience from her followers, and believes that mortals must follow a strict, unchanging hierarchy, or risk destroying themselves and others. She believes that the Great Sundering was the result of allowing mortals to advance themselves too much, and she now works to halt all progress whether it be technological, societal, or cultural. Vasilisa once took the form of a beautiful woman, with hair made from ever-flowing water. Now she herself appears to be frozen in time, wearing a crown of ice.   Vasilisa works to bind mortal life into a strict hierarchy. She teaches that each creature has its place, and that only a select few can be trusted with leadership. As much of the followers of Vasilisa dwell in the sea, the Alghollthu serve as her primary lieutenants. The Alghollthu hatch their plots to assert themselves as the masters of all life, and as a result bind them under Vasilisa's will. To better fulfill this goal, the Alghollthu are the one group of Vasilisa's servants that are allowed to change, adapt, and evolve themselves and others to fulfill their mission. While the Alghollthu are her primary servants, their aquatic nature proves to be an issue when dealing with the land. As the one rule the Alghollthu are not allowed to violate change is their aquatic nature, and thus their reliance and Vasilisa for life, the Tyrant of the Tides uses Devils to infiltrate the land and those who live above the clouds. As Vasilisa has significantly reduced influence on the surface, her servants tend to use subterfuge to accomplish their goals. They will sabotage research, bind mortals into contracts, and disguise themselves to build secret cults. When a mortal bound to Vasilisa dies she takes their soul and freezes it in her divine realm, until she decides what role is appropriate for it and reshapes it to suit her needs.   Vasilisa ranks all of her followers by how much they contribute to her plans. When she deems that a follower has proven to be sufficiently capable, they will be moved further up the Hierarchy. This ensures her most capable followers are put in positions where they can most effectively advance he cause. Though there is a careful balance that must be kept. Vasilisa wants her followers to accept their place in the Hierarchy, but she also wants to make sure she finds the correct place for each follower. Changing the Hierarchy means that her followers stay dedicated to proving themselves to her, but a side effect is that competition within the Hierarchy will occasionally escalate. Vasilisa harshly punishes any infighting, to try to keep that competition to a minimum.

Holy Books & Codes

The Order of All is a list that details every creatures place in the Hierarchy. It lists the rights and duties of each creature, and which creatures are above it. The Order of All is regularly updated by Vasilisa each year, to reflect which of her servants have succeeded in advancing her goals and have proved they deserve a higher place.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Vasilisa's followers wear chains around their necks and wrists to represent their servitude to her. More powerful followers craft special, never melting ice as their bindings. These bindings are also sometimes enchanted with spells that turn the wearer into a completely obedient servant, beholden to the church of Vasilisa.

Tenets of Faith

The core belief is that every creature has its place. Attempts to change this place, or fight against the Hierarchy will only lead to disaster. Life should accept that its bindings are necessary to keep it from destroying itself. All life must obey those above them in the Hierarchy, and may command those below them. Vasilisa is at the top of the Hierarchy, and must be obeyed.   Though not strictly members of her church, sailors who travel the partially frozen seas of the Sunken Lands have a strict code of guidelines that they and passengers need to follow when travelling by boat, so as not to earn Vasilisa's wrath.

Holidays

The start of each knew year is known as the Day of Judgement to followers of Vasilisa. On this day The Order of All is updated, and each follower learns their new place in the Hierarchy.
