Tengu

Tengu are a race of crow-like humanoids, known for their cunning minds, sharp eyes, and deep connection to ancient traditions. Though they possess wings and avian features, modern Tengu are flightless, having lost the ability to soar generations ago. Rather than mourn this loss, they have channeled their heritage into mastery of martial discipline, spiritual rites, and trickery.   Tengu stand slightly shorter than humans, with wiry, agile builds. Their bodies are covered in sleek black or charcoal-gray feathers, often accented with red or blue markings that signify family lines or spiritual rank. Their heads resemble those of crows or ravens, complete with sharp beaks, expressive eyes, and occasionally elaborate crests or feathery hoods. Though winged, their wings are small or vestigial, often used for gestures, intimidation, or balance when leaping.   They dwell in mountaintop monasteries, misty forests, or ruins reclaimed by nature—places of isolation and hidden knowledge. Tengu are often seen as guardians of lost wisdom, protectors of sacred sites, or keepers of ancient pacts. They value discipline, cleverness, and honor, but also prize pranks, riddles, and stories—seeing the world as both a lesson and a game.   Many Tengu train in martial arts, illusion magic, or stealth, combining physical skill with misdirection. A typical Tengu warrior fights with swift, unpredictable movements and light curved weapons like wakizashi, spears, or talon-like claws. Some wear wooden or painted masks that honor spirits, deities, or great ancestors.   Culturally, they are deeply ritualistic and highly philosophical, meditating often, observing omens, and passing down teachings through cryptic tales and symbolic art. They believe wisdom must be earned through challenge, not handed down freely.   Though aloof and mysterious, Tengu are not unkind. They often take on the role of mentors, hermits, or spiritual guides—if one can earn their trust or survive their tests.   To encounter a Tengu is to face a living puzzle—a creature of paradox: grounded yet skyward in spirit, solemn yet mischievous, ancient yet ever-adaptable.
