Runefolk

Runefolk are a race of artificial beings created through ancient magical engineering, where stone, metal, and arcane inscriptions converge into sentient life. Forged by long-lost civilizations or enigmatic godlike artisans, Runefolk are animated not by flesh or blood, but by powerful runes etched into their bodies, which pulse with magical energy.   Their bodies are constructed from smooth stone, polished obsidian, enchanted alloys, or even crystalline materials, all inlaid with glowing runes that serve as both lifeforce and function. These runes—written in forgotten languages of power—shift, hum, or flare depending on their actions and emotions. Their forms are generally humanoid, though they tend to be taller and more rigid in posture, with symmetry favored in their design.   Runefolk are not born but awakened, emerging fully conscious from their creators' forges or vaults. Despite their origin, they possess individuality, emotion, and the ability to learn and grow. Many seek purpose in a world that no longer resembles the one they were made for, often becoming scholars, guardians, or adventurers in search of meaning or forgotten knowledge.   They are deeply tied to rune magic, able to channel arcane energy through the inscriptions on their bodies to create barriers, augment allies, or release devastating magical attacks. Their understanding of magic is often instinctual—embedded into their very core.   Runefolk do not age in the traditional sense. While their bodies may wear down or suffer damage, they can be repaired or re-inscribed. Some choose to etch new runes over time, altering their abilities or appearance as a form of personal evolution.   To encounter a Runefolk is to meet a living relic of ancient power, both construct and soul—etched with secrets of a bygone era and powered by the echoing force of rune-magic itself.
