Duergar
Duergar, often called Deep Dwarves, are a grim and stoic subrace of dwarves who dwell in the deepest, darkest reaches of the earth. Shaped by generations of harsh survival, isolation, and exposure to subterranean magic, Duergar are tougher, colder, and more ruthless than their surface kin. While they still value craftsmanship and clan, their priorities lean toward endurance, secrecy, and control.
Duergar society is built within the immense caverns of the underworld—black stone halls lit by glowing fungus and molten veins of metal. Their cities are fortress-laboratories, where industry and order reign supreme. In Duergar culture, strength is proven through mastery: of metal, of magic, and of one's own mind. Many are skilled in psionics or dark runesmithing, blending magic and machinery in hauntingly precise ways.
They share the dwarves’ broad, muscular build, but with a paler or ashen complexion—ranging from stone gray to ghost white, often marked by scars, tattoos, or ritual burns. Their eyes gleam with an eerie glow—red, pale blue, or silver—and their hair is usually white, black, or steel gray. Beards remain a symbol of pride, often bound in angular patterns or braided with metal wire.
Unlike their surface kin, Duergar are less bound by warmth or hospitality. Trust is earned slowly, and betrayal is met with cold finality. Yet, they are not inherently cruel—they are disciplined, practical, and unwavering in their pursuit of survival and power in an unforgiving world.
To face a Duergar is to face a people who have stared into darkness—and become it.
