Hedgian

The Hedgian people originate from the vast, untamed hills east of the Rulk River, a region historically known as the Hedge. For centuries, the Hedge was a wild and rugged land with little central authority, characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, and scattered small communities, with Sandor’s Pass being the only significant settlement that connected the region to the rest of the continent. The Hedgians developed a culture that valued independence, resilience, and resourcefulness, often living in isolated villages where they learned to fend for themselves against the challenges of their environment. Since being united under House Barranzo, who now rule all of the Hedge, the Hedgian people have gradually come under more centralized control, but they still maintain their proud traditions, including their unique festivals, folk tales, and reverence for the natural world. Despite the changes brought by House Barranzo's rule, the Hedgians remain known for their fierce loyalty to their land, their adaptable nature, and their strong sense of community, continuing to embody the spirit of the untamed hills they have always called home.

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

The Hedgian people have a heritage that reflects their enduring connection to the wild, untamed hills of the Hedge, a region that remained largely uncharted and free from outside influence for much of its history. For centuries, they lived in scattered, self-sufficient communities across the vast hills and forests, relying on their resourcefulness and adaptability to survive in the harsh, often unpredictable environment. The only major settlement, Sandor’s Pass, served as a hub for trade and communication, but most Hedgians led lives shaped by the land, learning to hunt, farm, and build with the natural resources available to them. Despite their decentralized lifestyle, the Hedgians developed a strong sense of identity, bound together by shared stories, customs, and a reverence for nature that was passed down through generations. Over time, as the Stormclaw Empire expanded, the Hedgians came under the rule of House Barranzo, but they continue to preserve the traditions, folk tales, and independent spirit of their ancestors, maintaining a heritage that speaks to their resilience, strength, and deep connection to the land.

Shared customary codes and values

The Hedgian people hold values that are deeply rooted in their history of living in the untamed, rugged lands of the Hedge, with independence, self-reliance, and a strong sense of community being at the core of their identity. Having lived for generations in isolated villages across the vast hills, they learned to be resourceful and adaptable, valuing the ability to survive and thrive in difficult environments. Loyalty to family and local communities is paramount, as Hedgians believe that unity and mutual support are essential for overcoming the hardships of their land. They also place great emphasis on honor and integrity, believing that one’s word and actions define their worth, and they pride themselves on being straightforward and trustworthy. While they have come under the rule of House Barranzo, the Hedgian people continue to cherish their traditions, respect the land, and uphold the values that have allowed them to endure and prosper in their rugged homeland for countless generations.
