Drainer Profession in The Stage Coach | World Anvil

Drainer

Drainer is one of several backstage occupations among the populace aboard the Stage Coach. While considered part of the prop crew, they're generally seen as a little bit of outsides among the rest of the group. This is because most often, anyone tasked with being a drainer is seen as an oddball, even aboard the Stage Coach, where lots of odd and unusual people gather; the reason for this view is because of the tasks they are given, and how readily they most often handle them.   The drainers are the people that they the filthy jobs, while also being allowed a level of expression in their work that is a bit more chaotic and unrestrained than the other prop jobs are. The drainers get to paint, get to make the props that need to look unkempt and unruly. They create the parts of the stage decoration and equipment that can be and should look a little more unpredictable than the otherwise very streamlined and purposeful crafts made for the various plays that is put up by the Stage Coach populace. The chaos that the drainers bring is considered a useful blight by the more neat persons that find their way into the other stagehand teams; although the drainers are a troublesome lot, their ability to make fake wilderness look real is good for several scenes and settings, and the atmosphere that the drainers can put in a scene with the stuff that they create can give it a whole different feeling, both for the actors and for the audience.   The drainers are headed by G'retha Hattier, an elven woman that people say have more than one dozen loose screws jingling around in her skull. She has been with the Stage Coach for quite some time, perhaps since the early days, before it was a theatre that roamed the planes.   There is a rumour among the rest of the prop team that there's something strange with the drainers, that cause them to enjoy their jobs as much as they do. Some say that it's G'retha, who have gone mad and mix something into the tea that she serves to make others as nutty as she is. Some say that exposure to the plant she's using to add flavour to her tobacco causes it, and she's not purposefully causing the other drainers to become weirder and weirder. Some, who have talked to the drainers about it, say that according to the drainers themselves, they enjoy their work because they can explore materials and methods in a completely different way- which the other prop teams consider another absurdity of the drainers. After all, it has to be something weird, something infecurious, that grips hold of a person once they become a drainer, as has happened to several people who once were nothing like that before.   The drainers live in the prop team's dormitory, which is located near the back stairs of the stage coach. However, it is not uncommon to find one or more drainer work through the night and sleep during the day, or to outright sleep in the workshops.
