Nikalar

The Smiling

Nikalar (a.k.a. The Mockingbird)

Nikalar, sometimes called the smiling, was a bard of minor repute who lived in the Winasur Empire during the later part of the Great Imperial Era. His only legacy is a mostly forgotten ballad and two obscure books of poetry.
The true reason Nikalar is still remembered is that many bardic scholars suspect that he was also the person behind The Mockingbird, an anonymous bard who became famous throughout the Winasur Empire. He published a series of satirical books where easily identifiable caricatures of those with power and wealth would stumble trough numerous situations that not only embarrassed the one being portrayed but also exposed secrets they though hidden from all. He also composed a number of songs that ridiculed and mocked different nobles but were very popular with the common folk. Many of these songs are still sung today in taverns, just as the books he published can be found in many nobles' libraries.
His books and songs made him many enemies and after tormenting the powerful and wealthy for more than a decade it all suddenly stopped as quickly as it began. Some scholars suspect that one of the people he had mocked had found out who he was and had him killed. Others argue that he simply stopped because he grew tired. Whatever the cause no one has ever found out who he was or what happened to him, but it is generally agreed that the most likely person was Nikalar.
Besides the songs and books, The Mockingbird is also though to be the creator of the bardic path known as the College of Whispers. The truth of this is hard to determine as the bards who choose this path are notoriously secretive.
