United States of America
The United States of America (US) was a nation that spanned North America before it fell apart in the 2030s. When magic returned to the world, the US faced large scale revolts from Native Americans lead by Daniel Howling Coyote. When these revolts weren't taken seriously, Howling Coyote and his people began a large-scale magical ritual which resulted in the Great Ghost Dance, causing large-scale devastation and ultimately the collapse of the US, which reformed into the United Canadian American States.
History
Corporate Rise
The decline of the US starts with the growth of corporate power. During the early 90s a global push to de-escalate nuclear tensions lead to most global powers reducing their nuclear arsenal by 90%. Amidst this worldwide feelling of peace and security, Jeremy Lynch ran for and gained the office of president. Lynch ran on a platform of economic revitalization, which the people of America ate up and which the US Senate quickly followed along with. Unfortunately, Lynch's plan for America meant privatizing most national industries, from the postal service to the military. Alongside privitization, Lynch kneecapped regulatory bodies in the US, allowing corporations to work with less and less oversight. The one-two hit of the Seretech Decision and the Shiawase Decision saw corporations gain rights to extraterritoriality, almost no regulations, and access to human rights as designated for individuals. NASA would slowly be dissolved, eventually sold to Ares Macrotechnology and the military became almost entirely operated by weapons dealers and mercenaries. Although this was great for the corporations themselves, this decision turned out horribly for the American people. Unemployment reached 50% as social welfare networks collapsed without regulation to keep them steady. The US's global presence declined, moving from a global power to a highly regional one. Thankfully for the US, most other global powers saw similar shifts from national power towards corporate power. The one exception was Japan which saw a drastic uptick in military power following the US withdrawal from the Japanes mainland. The new Imperial Japan began to expand across the Pacific, threatening to cause problems for the US west coast.Denver and Howling Coyote
Lynch's successor, Martin Hunt, attempted to roll back corporate power but found that the US Sentate favored the corporations over him. After one term, Hunt was followed by Philip Bester, a corporate puppet that made the mistake of opening protected lands for use by the corporations. Bester, as well as his successor Jesse Garrety, allowed corporations to exploit formerly protected national lands. Under Garrety, a bill called the Re-Education and Relocation Act also forcibly moved Native Americans off of protected lands. In response to Garrety's often aggressive stance to Amerindians, the Sovereign American Indian Movement rose in power. Garrety's stances were viewed as destructive for the US, so much so that his successor William Jarman won on a platform of negotiating with the SAIM. Unfortunately, Jarman rescinded his promises once in office. He continued the work of the Garrety administration by antagonizing the SAIM, ultimately leading to the breakout of the Ghost Dance War. The entirety of the US suffered at the hands of naturally disasters summoned up by the SAIM leader, Daniel Howling Coyote in a ritual now referred to as the Great Ghost Dance allowed by the return of magic. This period also coincides with the first VITAS plague, which hit North America hard. By the turn of the decade, the US had lost a third of its population. To settle the ongoing conflict with SAIM, the US government met with them in the city of Denver to sign a treaty. The Treaty of Denver ceded massive amounts of US territory to the newly created Native American Nations. The states of California and Texas remained, but both would leave the union within a decade. Aside from the city of Seattle, nothing west of the Mississippi remained of the old US.Disbandment
The final nail in the coffin of the old US was the Crash of '29. The widespread destruction of the Crash, built on top of two decades of destruction, finally forced the US government to come to terms with its own imminent collapse. Thankfully, Canada was in a similar state. The then US president, Andrew MacAllister, met with the Canadian Prime Minister, Harold Frazier, to sign the Act of Union, formally disolving the old US and unifying with Canada to form the United Canadian American States. Although the Act of Union was signed in 2030, the new constitution wasn't formalized until 2031.
Although most of the territories that hadn't gone to the Native American Nations had been unified into the new UCAS, several new nations seceeded in the coming years. The California Free State, Confederation of American States and Republic of Quebec each broke off in the following decade, splintering the old North American states.
