Elves

Elves are one of the types of metahumanity and the third most common after humans and orks. Of the metahuman variants elves are generally considered the most socially accepted since they have the easiest time passing as human. Elves are also the only metahuman variant to have their own distinct culture from humans, including a language and a home kingdom in Tir Tairngire.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Elves are on average slightly taller than humans at around 190cm and slightly lighter on average at 70kg. This gives them a slightly lighter frame and narrower facial features, although elves can have muscle mass on par with humans. They have very little body hair but have much thicker head hair than humans, which tends to have a silky quality that adds to their perception of beauty and nobility.

Genetics and Reproduction

Like humans, elves usually only give birth to one child at a time, although elf twins are not unheard of. Elves gestate for a little bit longer than humans do at 12 months, but otherwise grow at around the same rate as humans. Since their maturity age is around that of humans but with a longer lifespan, the stereotype that elves are naturally more mature is common.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once an elf reaches the age of 25 their features begin to "freeze," so they no longer appear to age. Many elves claim that they can tell an older member of their species from a younger member, but what exact indicators are used are not discussed to non-elves.    The topic of elf lifespans is a complicated subject due to a number of factors. For one, elves have only existed on a timespan that is shorter than expected for any metahuman variant, elves included. Further, elf lifespan became a political conflict once Tir Tairngire formed. The Tir elves claim that elves can live for hundreds of years before dying of old age, but scientists that aren't associated with Tir claim that the number is likely closer to one-hundred. Claims that elves existed before the Awakening suggest they could also have a lifespan of multiple centuries, but these claims are insubstantiated.    One exception to this last statement is the Immortal Elves, a group of elves that supposedly existed during the Fourth World and have lived onward since then. Although several different reliable sources insist that Immortal Elves exist, including the dragons, only one elf claims to be an Immortal Elf; Ehran the Scribe. Since Ehran has yet to die and has only existed on the public record during the last few decades, there is no way to fully prove his claims.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Elves make up about 15% of the worldwide population, with several areas of especially high concentration. Both Tir Na Nog and Tir Tairngire have excpetionally high elven populations and regions where Humanis Policlub have a strong presence tend to have low elven populations.

Elves, like humans, can also have regional metavariants, based on the environment around them. Elves can often have skin variations based on what would naturally blend into the environment around them; paler skin towards the poles, greener skins towards the tropics, etc.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

For the most part, elves have sensory capabilities comparable to that of humans. Their eye cones are slightly more developed, giving them better vision especially in the dark, but otherwise they have no notable differences to humans.

Civilization and Culture

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Elves are the only metahumans to have arrived in the Sixth World with a cultural identity already formed. Orks, trolls, and dwarved also have a cultural identity, but it was forged over the years since their arrival. Elves, on the other hand, have a fully developed culture that arrived alongside their emergence. This includes cultural values, usually centered around communion with nature, and a language called Sperethiel, which many elves naturally know how to speak. This culture isn't a genetic expression, as not all elves follow the same ideology, but nevertheless seems to be a remnant of who they were during the Fourth World, something that other metahumans did not carry with them.

History

Elves were among the first metahumans to arrive during Goblinization. Early cases of UGE saw humans shift into elves and dwarves, often to the horror of their parents. The first use of the term "elves" was coined by a Newsweek article in 2011, which also coined the term for dwarves. By the 2020s, elves were common enough to no longer cause the same level of panic, but were still considered an ill omen of a world changing for the worse. When orks and trolls arrived in the early 2020s, attention moved slightly away from elves. Most racially movitated political groups consider elves to be more respectable than orks or trolls, but still substandard to humans.    In 2035, a group of elves split of from the Salish-Sidhe Council to form Tir Tairngire, a fully elvish nation in what used to be Oregon. A year earlier, Tir Na Nog formed in what is now Ireland, although the latter has had less of an impact on the global stage, due largely to internal conflicts. Both countries have heavily isolationist attitudes, likely influenced by prejudice experienced by elves in other nations. In particular, Tir Tairngire and the California Free State experience constant tensions due to the latter's official stance on elves.
