Headless Horseman

The Spirit of Sleepy Hollow

His real name unknown, the vengeful spirit known as the Headless Horseman, is a Knight of Hallow and perhaps his most loyal servant. After his death as a casualty of war, he was risen from his grave by Hallow, bound to his service until he found his head.

Physical Description

Special abilities

The Headless Horseman is absolutely lethal while riding his trust dark steed, known as the Nightmare. The horse can travel at supernatural speeds, and its magical ability to reduce its material form to an incorporeal form of shadow, allowing both the Nightmare and his rider to disappear into material objects, reappearing at other points. This also means that the Headless Horseman can never be separated from his steed, unless willingly, as the horse can simply rematerialize under his rider should he be knocked off.

Personal history

Exceptionally little is known about the Headless Horseman's history before his death, as he was a casualty of war. According to legend, on Kelemvor 28th of 376 AP, in the Battle of White Plains of Scarlet's Revolutionary War, an Elarian soldier was decapitated by a Scarlesian cannon, and the shattered remains of his head were scattered across the battlefield while his allies hastily carried his body away. The soldier was eventually buried in a cemetery at a church in the village of Sleepy Hollow. This is where the legend of that Elarian soldier ends, and where his service as a Knight of Hallow begins.   After his death, the Headless Horseman was risen from his grave by Hallow, the god of terror, who saw in him an opportunity for a most vengeful spirit and servant. Hallow offered the fallen soldier an opportunity; Hallow could resurrect him, so that he could walk among the living and enact vengeance on the victorious enemies of his war, but only if the Headless Horseman pledged servitude. As a condition for his servitude, Hallow added that the Horseman would be free from his service should he ever find his head, but Hallow was of the full knowledge that his head had been completely pulverized by the cannonball, with the scattered bone fragments and meat never to be pieced together again. Unbeknownst of this fact, the Headless Horseman pledged his loyalty to Hallow, hopeful of one day being free. As a boon to his newfound servant, Hallow replaced the spirit's lost head with a jack-o-lantern, Hallow's own symbol. With this boon, the spirit was again given the ability to see and hear, but he could not speak.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

The Headless Horseman is largely considered to be the most loyal Knight of Hallow by his fellow Knights and their creeds. This likely due to the fact that the Headless Horseman was the only member of Hallow's Knights to have conditions of freedom attached to his servitude; the prospect of one day finding his head, though impossible, drives the Headless Horseman to honor Hallow's wishes and strike fear into those around his domain of eastern Scarlet.
