The Imperium of Man
The history of the world begins with The Imperium of Man. The Imperium was the grandest empire to have ever existed. It spread over all the world, far beyond The Civilized Lands , to lands and realms that now have been lost. However, after the fall of the The Imperium, the destruction and loss of knowledge was so complete, all that remains of The Imperium are the scattered ruins of great cities and oral tradition, stories relayed down through the generations.
These stories tell of a mighty empire, lasting for millennia. They tell of great cities that spread across the land where even the humblest peasant lived in comfort, peace, and security. The Imperium had brought peace to all the world by uniting all races and all peoples under a single flag, pushing back all that opposed justice and freedom with powerful magics and formidable armies. The stories tell of a land free from hunger and want, blessed by the gods (or God ) with bountiful crops and lush fields. Some stories even claim that The The Dead Wastes were rich and fertile, with fields of grain that stretched as far as the eye could see. But, the centerpiece of The Imperium was the capital city of Erra, in a far off land, now lost to history. The stories tell of a city of wonders, riches, learning, and magical power beyond imagining.
How much of these stories are true and how much has been embellished by centuries of storytellers, no one knows. Ruins from The Old World, as it is called, are commonplace, but no records from the age of The Imperium have survived. It is as if a great wind blew all the writings from the age of the Imperium into the sea.
Tales of great riches and powerful magical items left untouched in hidden chambers of imperial ruins or of ancient maps leading to the lost city of Erra beyond The Dead Wastes have fired the imaginations of adventurers and fortune seekers for centuries.
